Well, I think we are ready to fly.... we have our travel letter and we are bringing supplies just in case the pump fails. The last post made me realize that I am not sure what is safe to put through the x-ray machine. I was planning on putting the carry-on with all her supplies through x-ray but is that safe? I was told they might search her but is there a trick to make this a smooth trip through security? It seems like every post about traveling is a little different. Is there anything we should keep in mind? I have warned my husband and daughter that they might pull us aside. I told my husband to keep his protective fatherly instincts in check so we will be allowed to fly after the security check! I think this might be hard for me as well..... :(
Any advice would be helpful,
Thanks Dee

The only thing that should not go through the x-ray machine (where you put the carry on luggage on a belt) is the pump. Have your child wear his pump.

We've flown out of Boston a bunch of times w/o much hassle. Everything except for the pump can go through x-ray. Make sure you have your letter (though we've never been asked for it) and tell the TSA agent at both the belt and the scanner your child is wearing a pump. It may or may not set off the alarm. I suggest you have yourself or hubby go through first to intercept the bag with supplies and then the other stay with the child. I have to say with all the hassle of flying out of Logan, getting through security wasn't that bad. Finding a parking spot was worse:D

Our CDE told us not to even say anything unless they asked. She said wear a loose shirt that will cover it and just go through. We did tell the first TSA agent that she has D and had all of her supplies with her, but the lady just told us they didnt need to know- just put all of it on the belt to be scanned. So, she just walked through (with her pump on-get a letter from your endo saying that it can't be removed), with the letter from her endo in her hand just in case. For the rest of the trip we didn't say a word unless they asked. We had no problems inside the US. If your child does not wear a medic alert bracelet, I would suggest get a traditional bracelet for him to wear for the trip. Also you should print out what the TSA site ( http://www.tsa.dhs.gov/ ) says you may bring aboard because your child has D. We hope you have a great problem free trip.

we just flew and I have to say, what made it easier on the way back was to have all the creams (emla and such) in a quart size zipper bag.. along with insulin.. we had it in a frio cooler.. all went fine with that.. juice we had the little tiny 15oz boxes, 3 to a zipper bag.. I just put everything in bags and just pulled them out for them to easily see.. on the way down we had things divided into seperate carry ons just in case.. but we were carrying it on and looking back it would have been SO much easier to have all the insulin together, all the emla together and so on.. (we brought lots of extras! just in case).. her pump can't go through the table x-ray but can go through the metal detector.. comign back from orlando the airport security ask if it was an insulin pump.. I was surprised that she knew what it was.. when we left home they had no clue though:)

have fun on your trip!
