Another new member here. I've been receiving the email digest, but hadn't officially joined.

My son Kyle was diagnosed last year. He loves to share the story: our cat, Cacique, was diagnosed with diabetes on Friday September 1, 2006. Typical symptoms: excessive drinking, peeing, eating, then losing weight. We started giving Cacique two shots a day. School started Tuesday, and on Thursday evening I noticed that Kyle was eating all the time, drinking like a fish, and waking up to go to the bathroom. When he stepped on the scale and announced he had lost 6 pounds....I took him to the doctor on Friday afternoon: they sent us to Children's in Boston for the weekend, and here we are. Kyle was never sick because we caught it so early (thank you, Cacique!) and missed only a day of school. He's gone from Humulin/Humalog to MDIs with the Novolog pen and one shot of Lantus, to the MM pump in May. The honeymoon is over: the biggest problem is he's growing like a weed (5'10" and size 12+ shoes) and the whole hormone/teen thing is going on, and of course that raises havoc with the everything. I will be especially interested in what gets said about and by kids in this age group (he'll be 13 in October).

This forum has already helped me: I learned about mastisol a few weeks ago, and we haven't lost a site since! I hope to check back often and share anything I can, but since its still "new" for us, I think I'll be taking more from you all then I can give at this point.

Cheers!

Welcome!! What a special cat:D
My ds isn't in puberty yet, but those growth spurts can be killer. I'm sure pumping will help with temp basals.

Wow! What are the odds of your cat and son being diagnosed close together like that! Amazing! Welcome to the forum! :D

Welcome Camille and Kyle! Sounds like our boys are interchangeable, 5'10" and 12+ shoes! We're only about 4 months longer into this than you...it's quite a ride!

Thanks for the welcomes. I can see that we are in excellent company. And once we get off this incredibly slow dial-up connection, I know that we'll glean incredible amounts of information from all of you (and hopefully Kyle will make some connections with other kids too).

Cheers.
