Ok, I have a question..I am applying for nursing school, and I was just playing around on the computer last night looking at pratice nclex test..I found a site that had questions pertaining to diabetes(both type 1 and type 2)..I have a question about one of the questions..Here it is..
Which of the following is not an indicator of diabetic ketoacidosis?
Hyperthermia
Nausea/Vomiting
Slow and shallow breathing
Psychosis leading to dementia
I am going to let ya'll tell me what you would have put as the correct answer and then I'll tell you what THEY say is the correct answer...Maybe I was just wrong but I still think their answer is incorrect...

Well, there are two answers there that to me would seem right since they are listed as symptoms of DKA.
Nausea/Vomiting
Slow and shallow breathing
I'm guessing though that their answer is either Hyperthermia, or Psychosis leading to dementia?

I'm going with Hyperthermia
I don't remember my daughter having a fever, very dehydrated, but not from a fever obviously.
That's my final answer!
Okay how much money did I lose?

I have to say Hyperthermia as well, all the other ones are signs of DKA right?

I know that ketoacidosis involves Nausea/Vomiting and Slow and shallow breathing.
The possibilities that is not leave Hyperthermia and Psychosis leading to dementia.
I don't recall ever hearing that a high temperature went along with ketoacidosis, so I vote for Hyperthermia

That's what I was thinking...I'm leaning towards Hyperthermia though:)

I too vote for hypertermia although looking back right before Avery was diagnosed she was ALWAYS very flushed in her face and would be "hot" in December and January - literally wearing little spaghetti strap tanks - go figure..
I just took the HOBEt and start school for ST in August so good luck!
Anxious to hear what your answer is.....

Ok, I am not the only one..I answered the question hyperthermia...made sense to me...The answer according to them was slow and shallow breathing..So are they saying hyperthermia IS a symptom of dka..I have looked at that question and looked at the answer several times today to make sure I didn't read it wrong..I actually just pasted the question straight from the website to make sure I didn't type it wrong..If I knew how to go about doing it I would email whoever with the test and tell them that their information is incorrect..I can't find anything that says hyperthemia is a symptom of DKA..but I wanted to hear what ya'll had to say about it...

My vote is actually Psychosis leading to dementia. While brain swelling can occur with DKA, I do not believe that dementia is what is experienced, perhaps delirium, but not dementia. Hyperthermia can be caused by dehydration, which is a huge part of DKA.

OH COURSE!!! Actually deep, heavy breathing is a symptom of DKA, not shallow breathing!

You are correct, deep heavy breathing is a symptom of dka..But I would have never guessed hyperthermia was also..I couldn't find it listed on anything as a symtpom.

When my dd was dx she was in DKA and her breathing was fast. This is a symptom of DKA--they are trying to breathe out the ketones. I couldn't say that it isn't ever accompanied by slow, shallow breathing but I know it is sometimes accompanied by the rapid breathing. I wonder if the fever is not so much a symptom of DKA as of other infections which one might be likely to have with high blood sugar (since highs slow down healing, etc)? The dementia also seems weird. Perhaps it is a possible long-term consequence of DKA which is not treated in time? Or perhaps they mean more of a mental state which presents like dementia (disorientation etc) rather than actual dementia (a nurse's exam should be exact with such words though).

Ok, I looked up hyperthermia..Hyperthermia is the general name given to a variety of heat-related illnesses...Heat-related illnesses...What does diabetes and dka have to do with a heat related illness..

Again with the dehydration. You need to have water to sweat, if you can't sweat you can't release heat from your body, thus resulting in hyperthermia.
