Okay you might think I am stupid here but when I see other parents taking about numbers they are really high. I am from Canada and we have been that our son's blood glucose levels should be between 6 to 12 mmol/L (mmol/l is millimoles/liter,) So for us below 6 is low below 4 is really low. 12.1 to 17 is high and over 17 you should start checking for keytones.(after three really high readings in a row). So when I hear parents talking about numbers that are around 300 I am baffled.
Can someone give me the ranges that they use so I can better understand what they are talking about.
Thanks
hi aidie`s mom, i`m canadian too. it is just a different system that we and the uk use. i will find the post that gives the us equivilant for you.:)

Thanks 3Js, I just want to get a clearer picture of what the other parents are talking about. I'd appreciate that.
mmol/l mg/dl interpretation
------ ----- --------------
2.0 - 35 - extremely low, danger of unconciousness
3.0 - 55 - low, marginal insulin reaction
4.0 - 75 - slightly low, first symptoms of lethargy etc.
5.5 - 100 - mecca
5 - 6 - 90-110 - normal preprandial in nondiabetics
8.0 - 150 - normal postprandial in nondiabetics
10.0 - 180 - maximum postprandial in nondiabetics
11.0 - 200 -
15.0 - 270 - a little high to very high depending on patient
16.5 - 300 -
20.0 - 360 - getting up there
22 - 400 - max mg/dl for some meters and strips
33 - 600 - high danger of severe electrolyte imbalance
your target ranges will be a bit different from some people, as it varies with the child`s age. my son`s target is 4-10, but we treat a 4 as a low. we check for ketones at 15. but he`s 10yrs old.

It's OK because when I first read some # posts from Canada and the Uk I was baffled  especially when they were talking about getting a reading of 3 or a 4  I was like OMG!!!!

you can also multiply/divide to get the equivalent.
mmol x 18 = mg/dl
mg/dl / 18 = mmol

In our three year old our target is 6-12. We treat in the fours. We still see a lot of low twenties around midnight, but his little honeymooning body seems to bring him back to normal by morning.

Yes, unfortunately, even when the US goes metric (mg/dl is indeed metric) we manage to screw it up. :)
I apologize for all the bizzare units we to the south use...

For Emma, even when she was 3.5 year old, we always targetted 4-10. 12 to me seems a bit high. We don't freak out when she's 12, but we definately don't want to see her there.
