Last night Caleb had a crash on his bicycle. When it was all said and done, we were off to the ER for two stitches in his upper lip. Well, we got to the ER ( and of course, this happens 5 mins before dinner) and Caleb is freaking out b/c the last time we were at the hospital was when he was dx'd. His blood sugar is all over the place from the shock, no food and whatever else is going on inside his little body. So I explain to the triage nurse, he's T1. She asks, "What's his dose....yada yada yada?" "Well," she tells me, "while he's here we'll want to be in control of his D care." "Ummm, let me think....No! I don't think so!" She starts to rattle off about how that's the hospital policy. blah, blah, blah! I stopped listening at that point! Anyway, when she's finished I tell her, "when the doc comes in, I'll talk to him about it." She, of course, goes to find him immediately so he can set me straight!

Dr. Drew, the new love of my life ;), comes in asks me about 10 questions regarding Caleb and his D care, and says to the nurse. "Mrs. Brown will handle the D stuff, we'll handle everything else" God bless him. "Nurse Grumpy" walks away in a huff. Needless to say, Dr. Drew is my new favorite doc at the hospital.

Stacie~

So sorry for Caleb!!! So proud and happy for you Stacie!!!! Good Job!!!!

When Aidan was 2 about 3 months after his d'xd he fell and cut his lip really bad....took him to the ER at the children's hospital where he was d'xd. They talked about sedating him (sedating???? they wanted to use a general) to stitch him up.....It took me about 3 seconds to demand that before any "sedation" was given his endo was to be called in to consult 1st. Of course they weren't really fond of that idea and said that they doubted he was even available. That was all I needed to hear. Left Aidan in my cousin's arms who was there with us and I was out of the room searching the halls.....I returned with Aidan's endo in like 60 seconds.....the ER dr had no idea Aidan's endo had just past the door 2 minutes ago and was standing at the nurses station.

Anyway.....Good for you Stacie!!! They should know by now not to reckon' with the mom of a child with D!!!

Wow, good for you!

While I understand the legalities of needing to know what is going on, diabetes-wise, while a person is under hospital care, I do NOT understand why ER staff feels the need to "control" the D care when someone comes in for a cut or anything non-D related.

Thanks Everyone for the well wishes! Caleb is doing great! He was back on his bike this afternoon riding like nothing ever happened! I must add that I did quote Badshoe ( I think) and my most favorite line ever to Nurse Grumpy (which is what I think REALLY set her off ). "I'm not a doctor, but I play one at home." :D Dr. Drew laughed in agreement, Nurse Grumpy, well, if looks could kill, let's just say I wouldn't be typing this right now. ;)

Thanks again!

Great for you standing up for taking care of your son. When he is an adult he will learn to stand up for his D care as well. I always insist on doing my own D care when in for some procedure or some other reason.
