Is it possible that my son is a fluke? He has type 1 and celiac and he is the only type1 in either family (husband or mine). My husband and I have had the blood test for celiac and they have come back negative. Everything I read says it has to be hereditary...but does it?

I believe Celiac is an auto-immune disease, just like T1D. Sometimes autoimmune diseases in general run in families, but they don't HAVE to.

Celiac's an autoimmune disease. If you don't have the genes, you won't get Celiac, but if you do have the genes, you still might not get Celiac.

I know they are both autoimmune...but neither side of our family have autoimmune issues. Westin has both. I really want to know if that mean one of us have to carry the Celiac gene? Or can he be a fluke?

When Jonah was diagnosed with Celiac we were told it's genetic UNLESS it's related to another disease such as Diabetes. No one else in our family has Celiac either. It stinks but it happens, I think they told us 1 in 10 type 1's has Celiac.
