So, a growth spurt must be going on, how do you guys handle these on MDI? They recommend us not adjusting basals more than every 3days, but when your child is rising 200pts at night, only at night, do you just correct with Novolog and check all night long? This will be only day 2 with basal back in our requirements. Went to bed at 170, rose about 30pts per hour until she hit 332 and I couldnt take it anymore. So, I gave a .5correction novolog which would normally be HUGE for Maddison, but she has had crazy highs all days/nights last week. I'm happy the daytime numbers are back to great, but these night time numbers are crazy! This must be the growth spurt I have heard so much about. I am a bit stumped on how to work the nighttime numbers. I checked her every hour last night. So much for cutting back on the coffee. I would have to give 500 times the basal to keep up with these sleeping highs, so how the heck do you guys deal with these? Just correct with Novolog instead of adjusting basal for these growth spurts?

Oh man, we just went through a week of this and I am seriously dragging! I SO feel your pain!!
I do remember one growth spurt like this when Em was on MDI. We did not increase the Lantus because the highs were only at night and we didn't want her to be low during the day. So, yes, we just corrected with Novolog. I think at that time we were told to only correct every 3 hours. At least it only lasts a few days!

We never had much luck with crazy night numbers while on MDI...:( Emma needs significantly more insulin between 11pm and 2am or she'll be high all night and wake up way out of range, and it's hard to do without an adjustable basal. Upping the Lantus would cause lows at other times of day, but couldn't cover her nights.
My only suggestions is to cut out a bedtime snack, and/or give an injection when she starts to climb. It will mean more night testing, but hopefully it's only temporary.:cwds:
Emma has always had this pattern of much higher insulin needs at night, I guess due to constant growth. Her basal is 2.5X higher from 11p-2am than any other time of day, (except during breakfast).
Good Luck!

We had this problem too and would also wake up at night to give a shot of Humalog.
When do you give your Lantus? We were giving 1 unit of Lantus at night and 3 units in the morning, but we slowly rotated, so we are at 3 units at night and 1 in the morning. This is working great for us! His numbers are so much better at night!
Maybe this could work for you:)

We never passed 170 last night! At least with checking every 2 hours that is, and Maddison woke up at 126! Its been a month since we have had good night time numbers. One night of better numbers is total relief :)
What background insulin are you using and when are you giving it? We ended up splitting dd's Lantus because of the highs at night - anywhere from 230 to 480's:eek: With a once nightly shot, the Lantus was wearing off before the next shot kicked in. Now, if there are highs, they occur during the day and we can correct with the Novolog. It's not perfect, but it's better.
Good to hear her nighttime numbers have lowered!
