View Full Version : spoiled insulin?
I keep my sons insulin in the fridge at all times, except when we go to dinner- I put it in his bag that we carry his sugar supplies in. Will the insulin spoil being out of the fridge for a couple of hours?

no, the insulin should be just fine for a few hours.. we keep unopened insulin in the fridge and stuff that is opened we keep in Kaylee's D bag for 28 days.. then we throw it out and get a new one:)
the only time I'd keep putting it back in the fridge is if it were really really hot out:)

No, the manufacturer's insert will tell you that once a vial is opened, it is good for 28 days at room temp. We do not refrigerate open vials at all. The unopened bottles are kept in the fridge, but the "in use" bottles are kept on the counter with the other D supplies.

You don't need to keep the insulin in the fridge once it is opened. It will keep for 30 days fridge or not after the first use. The insulin in the pump is the same as you would use on MDI and that is in the cartridge for around three days. We always throw a bottle out around the first of each month. In the beginning I hated throwing it away, b/c we were hardly using it, but were afraid of it losing effectiveness.
Also, the insulin tends to burn going in if it is cold, so you may notice less of that if you leave it a room temperature.
One last note - even though it doesn't have to be kept cold, never leave it in a closed warm car or direct sunlight.

I was told by the nurse at my endo's office that the only thing to worry about is that the insulin doesn't ever get above 86 degrees - otherwise you have to throw it away. We used to keep our insulin out but now that the weather is getting warmer, I've decided to keep it refrigerated. No matter where you keep it though, it's still only good for 28 days.

The insulin should be fine out of the fridge. Megan likes to have hers at room temp., she says it doesn't sting so bad. We have a calendar near her "Diabetes Center" so she and I can see when it's time to renew.

We don't keep our opened insulin in the fridge. We just keep it out of extreme temps.

The 28 days depends on the insulin. Novolog and lantus are only good for 28-30 days but NPH and Regular are good for 6 months. I always keep mine in the refridgerator and warm it between my hands prior to shot time. I keep it cold for outings using the medicool carrier keeps it cold for 16-18 hours.
