We are new to pumping but seem to have a lot of trouble with this infusion set. Either the devise used for the set is already no good when we open it or it doesn't stick even with the prep or it comes off later. Is this because we are new or is this typical of the cleo? Can we get them replaced? My daughter loves the small size of the set and likes the device but we have already had trouble with at least 7 of them:eek: and only get a set amount every 3 months. Any advice would be great!
Thanks,
Diane

Are you having trouble with the set not working (very common with this set...they either work for you or they don't, no inbetween) or are you just having trouble with them not sticking???
The set worked for us but unfortunately my son reacted to the adhesive!! My son is one of those kids that is just not "sticky"...it does not matter what set we use, it doesnt stick...we use skin tac (you can get a free sample from torbot.com) and it does the trick.....

Boy, this seems to be a common problem.
Do you use IV prep or something similar before sticking the site on? And you know that once you position the Cleo, you can't really move it? Finally, is the length long enough for your daughter? Is she using a 6mm when a 9mm would be better?
We have used Cleos exclusively for 7 months and have had no real problems. The only thing I can tell you is that we use alcohol to dry the skin, then IV Prep. We let that dry then apply. But I think we're just lucky, I guess. I keep thinking it's only a matter of time before we start getting hit by the Cleo Curse!
I'd call Smiths and have them replace the ones that didn't work. Those puppies are expensive and they will send you new ones, or maybe another infusion set.

Hopefully I am understanding your question right. Is it that you are having problems getting the set to stick to the skin instead of the device at insertion? If so,there is a trick for this!!! (See below.) If not, you may want to try a better sticking agent. Skin Tac, is the next sticky after IV PRep, then Benzoin Tincture and Mastisol.
Here's the trick for getting the set to stick to the skin and not the insertion device:
After applying IV prep to the skin and letting it dry completely, remove the cap to the purple Cleo device.
Use one of your fingers (it helps if it is a finger that has a teeny bit of IV prep on it) and lightly tough the outside edge of the sticky part of the infusion set. When you pull your finger away make sure that you just barely pull the smallest bit of the sticky stuff away from the surface of the outer rim of that purple device. This makes it easier to separate the set from the device and have it stick to the skin.
Insert the set as directed, but after you insert and hear the click, keep some pressure on the device. Then start slowly rolling the edges of the device in a round motion.
Next look for the area where you touched the set. There you should see a place where it looks like the device is pulling away from the sticky part of the set. Gently peel back from this location. The set should stick.
Do not pull straight up on the device after setting the infusion set as it probably won't stick. Peeling from one side to the other (or from top to bottom, etc.) is the best.
If this isn't clear I can do a demo using our video camera and post it on youtube.

my son had 3 problems with the cleo's..
-they didnt stick to him for even 2 days- sometimes less.., and 2 sites fell out in his sleep resulting in ketones...
-He was also allergic to the tape. When we removed the sets, he'd have a bright red circle on his butt.. that took 2-3 days to disapper..
- he got 3-4 blockage alerts while using them.
and all of these problems occured with the first box....
In 4 years of pumping with quicksets , then insets, he had never had these problem.. and( knock wood) hasnt had it since he switched back to the insets...
Other than that, he really loved them.. said they were much more comfortable that the insets...and easier to use.. no clicking noise...:cwds:
oh well..........

Thank you for the advice. We are using IV prep but I will try the alcohol before the IV prep. We went through 3 yesterday. One for changing the site, that one fell off at softball, then the one we tried to use to replace the softball one didn't stick. We also have had 2 that when we open them the sticky tape part is already stuck to the cover of the device. Some fall off after insertion when we try and remove the purple device. I will keep trying but we have gone through a box and a half in a week and a half. I don't think we will have enough for the 3 months. I will try and call the company and we have an appt. today at the Joslin so I will talk to our endo. nurse about it. Thanks for all the tricks. I would hate to change something on her when she is just getting used to the pump. I will stop at CVS today and get the skin tack as well. Does anyone use skin tack all the time?
(To answer one question she has a 6mm set)
