OK - I know there have been other threads like this before but........
I definitely am always wondering if my daughter will also develop D. I recently had her tested for the antibodies and am awaiting the results. Meanwhile, I have noticed a little bit of wierd breath (Aidan had wierd breath too - not fruity - just not right- in the weeks before diagnosis.) Just now she complained of a headache and said "I'm thirsty" in the same sentence. So, I tested her and she is 136 - not high enough for me do draw any immediate conclusions, but we are 2.5 hours post dinner, and she is a thin 6 year old. Any thoughts? Just being paranoid? I can handle the truth so feel free to let me know I might be crazy:p

I only have Lia, but I am positive if I had another child I would be worrying about them having D too all the time. So I don't think you're paranoid.

That does seem a little high. I would call her doctor's office in the morning and tell them you would like to get her in tomorrow. But I wouldn't panic, it could be a fluke, slightly off meter, etc.

(((HUGS))), I hope it's nothing!

The meters are allowed to be off by up to 20% by the FDA, so your daughter's BG could easily have been in the low 100's in reality.
It's been a hot, dry week here in upstate NY, I assume it's been the same in NJ? Could she have been dehydrated? That would cause thirst and headaches, among other things. I've had to push my family to make sure that we've gotten enough liquids this week- when you're playing hard and sweating it's easy to ignore thirst! Maybe you could push liquids for a while and see what happens.
You're not crazy! We all are especially aware of those warning signs and worried when we see some of them. Try not to worry too much! You can always talk to your dr or cde and see what they think. Checking for ketones might help rule out D as well.

Only 50 percent of people who have the antibodies will ever get type 1 diabetes so even if your daughter comes back possitive it doesn't mean she will get it so don't put to much stock into the test predicting what will happen.

The test seems a little high but different things can cause highs. If you are smelling fruity or funny breath have her ketones checked, that is where you will find some clues.

If you are concerned I would take her to the docs and have some blood work done for the numbers and ketones. The meters can be up to 20 percent off and a normal can be different for every one. It is not uncommon for me to be in the fourties normaly and in the 90's after I eat and have a coke. This is very abnormal for most but normal for me.

I think this is a scary thought for all of us so don't beat yourself up for being afraid. Just have confidence in the fact that you know what you are doing and should the need arise you are the perfect one to handle it. You said that you could handle the truth and the truth is, no matter what the outcome. It will be okay. She will be okay and you will be okay. So say a little prayer and we will pray for you and your family.

God Bless!

Don't worry...you're not alone. My son is 19months older than meg (who's Type I). And I'm always wanting to check is sugar. I'm beginning to think that this is the new "norm" for us parents..to just stay VERY AWARE all the time. In my opinion, you're not crazy, and it couldn't hurt to ask the docs! Take Care....good luck.

I was "haunting" my non "D" daughter (10) again today, becuase she has been very tired, exhausted and thirsty. Finally I realized I am scaring her as much as she is scaring me! So, instead of poking her finger like I normally would do (she is crazy fearful of needles, or pokes) I bought the diastik glucose sticks for finding sugar in her urine. Now I can just say "please ease my crazy mom mind" and she will pee on the strip, which lately has been every few days. We all know that we will know for sure, if our other child develops "D", but dang it! I have a very persuasive mind! Nearly a panic attack of worry sometimes. If these silly strips make me feel better and rest my mind, then thats what I am using. I wouldnt go for antibodies, as Maddison never even had them when diagnosed. I wouldnt do any blood work either, a simple diastix or ketone strip is just as good for detection, and you can use it 5 times day if it helps you feel better!

I am sure that I would be crazy worried about my other kid(s) if I had other kid(s). Heck, there was a part of me that was certain Samantha would eventually develop D way before she was ever officially dx'd.

I agree that it could be that it has been hot and dry lately and maybe she is a bit dehydrated. To me 136 isn't all that high, given the margin of error with these meters. Does she ever get sinus infections? Those can make your breath smell weird and give you headaches. Just a thought.

I don't think you are crazy, but I also don't think it is the kind of number to get worked up about. Watch her and see if this is a chronic thing or something that passes. Something tells me that you'll know right away if it turns serious.:cwds:

I test my poor twins if they wake up with a diaper I think is too full or if they don't eat like I think they should..(Davis had completely quit eating the 3 weeks before he was dx)..Oh and Emily had a yeast infection a couple of weeks ago(she was on an antibiotic), but that also got her a finger prick..So I don't think you are crazy...My other two will be tested frequently cause I don't want them to ever be as sick as Davis was...
