Here is Mia. She is 5. She never complains about having D. Never. She bravely tests her own sugar and since recently, she can actually make sense of the number she sees on her meter. "Mommy, it's 85, a little low, how about 1 glucotab?" or "Mommy, I need to drink some water, my sugar is 220, that's a big too high!". And then the compassion. She is the one who gets pricked again and again but she cries and holds her little sister's hand when Ciana needs to have any test done, including those who don't hurt but sound scary to any 4-year old (like nose or throat swabs). What compassion. She is just the sweetest thing on this earth.
And then there is Ciana. The little sister. No doubt is a victim of D too. She runs and gets the meter for her big sister when Mia doesn't feel well. She knows her sister needs sugar when she is low. "Juice, Mommy, quick!" She volunteers to give up her TV spot on the couch when it's time for a set change (a ritual in our house). She knows Mia needs and gets more attention because of D. She tells other kids to keep their hands away from Mia's pump because she knows it's what keeps Mia healthy. She looks out for her big sister.
I am so blessed to have such a beautiful family. Just had to share.
