View Full Version : minimed-active insulin
Should young kids have the "active insulin" time setting at 2 hours or 3 hours. I've been told 2 hours from one endo and 3 hours from another. I've currently got my 5 y/o son's 515 set at 3 hours active, but wondering if we'd have better post-pran results with 2 hours active. Any advice/experience would be appreciated.

I just asked the same question to my endo yesterday and he told me 3 hours. But my son is 12 almost 13. When we started the pump was set for 4 hours and I changed it to 2 cause my son was always having to override it for corrections. THe endo said change it back to 3 hours.

ours is set at three but sometimes need to overide it by using manual bolus, after all it is only a guide and depending in activity level, food intake and general health it can vary day to day

We use 3 hours like most of the others here. Not sure why, but it seems to work for us.

this is a very individualized setting and of course once you figure it out and you've got it right, things will change again... so 2 vs 3 hrs doesn't make sense other than as a starting point and either one will do. Lots of pre and post meal testing, analysis and tuning - but not too much :) How's that for an it depends answer?

Liv's is set to 3 hours. When we started we were told to set it for 4 hours. We changed it to 3 hours with better results.

Our Endo wanted ours set to 4 hours, but I was a bad girl and changed it to 3 hours because that worked well with MDI. I should have listened to him because DIA of 3 hours on the pump crashed her when we did corrections--he called it "getting caught by the Novolog tail". So do whatever works best for you--I see that our DIA is unusually long compared to others, but it works for us.

I have played with these setting a lot, (like all of them ), and 3 hours is the best setting for Emma. I still override the active insulin on occasion, but it keeps her from having pot meal lows. With a 4 hour setting she was high too often.
I think you just have to tweak things and see what works best! Making small adjustments to one setting at a time gives us the best results. It's all a constant work in progress!:)
