Thomas only checks his bg post meals if he guesses on his carbs or if his bgs are off for a few days and we want to check carb ratio/basal.

Only when testing/changing his I:C ratios.

we check at the 2 hr mark quite often, we have young kids and they want a snack in the morn and one in the afternoon - this usually falls a few hours after a meal, and we have found that we are able to figure out how many carbs he can have for free if any for a snack at that time...

So do most people only give correction doses before a meal and not in between? So if your child goes high after a meal you don't really know until the next meal.Maybe i'm checking Chase way to many times I know he would be happy to just check before meals and not after.

Before we got the cgms we had to. Hailey has never reacted to the same amount of insulin for the same food at the same time so we always checked the 2 hour mark to make sure she wasn't going too low (she is hypo unaware also). Now that we have the CGMS we seldom ever check 2 hours post meal, we just look at the pump :D

On MDI our endo does not allow us to correct until it has been 4 hours post meal .

We will check Deanna 3 hrs post meal after lunch and correct if she is high, and we will check post meal after dinner again at around 3 hours, but this is the time she usually goes to bed,and I don't like correcting her before bed, I like her to go to bed a little high. But we always do a 1 am check to see where she is and have at times done a correction, there have even been timeswhere she will be a little low and we have had to give her juice. Our endo had also said not to correct unless its been 4 hours after an injection, but we are doing it more in the 3 hour mark and our endo said that was fine

The school nurse does, but we do not. Our CDE said that as long as the bg comes down to within range before the next meal, that it doesn't matter if she's high 2 hours after. The CDE said that it's normal for them to spike like that and it's ok as long as they come down before the next meal. I'm not sure how much I like that idea, but not sure how to fix 2 hour post meal highs either...

I don't always do a 2 hour post meal. Our normal schedule is
7 am - before breakfast
10 am at school (before snack)
12 (right after school and right before lunch) so technically it is 2 hours post snack, but I consider it pre meal
3:30
depending on the 3:30 reading and how much food was consumed between then and dinner, I may or may not test again right before dinner
7:30 which again is 2 hours post meal, but I am doing it more as a prebedtime reading
11pm
that number determines if I am up multiple times to test again, or if it is mid 100's I'll usually sleep through.
Hope this isn't too confusing, b/c as I'm looking at this, is does look like we do a two hour post check, but I've never done it for that reason.

We have always done a correction 2 hours post if needed. We have never been told not to. But now that we are using the dual bolus with every meal as we were told to by our endo since he just got back from a confrence and they were saying that was more natural to the pancrease than a bolus all at once. I must say the last few days since we have been using it Chase's numbers are better. I'm just confused about the post bs#numbers to check or not and to correct or not????

we often check at the 2 hour mark just to see how things are going.. she's little and things change often.. also, she is typically ready for another meal/snack by that time so we are checking BG anyway LOL..

We quite often check 2 hours post-meal because it gives us a good indication if Mia will be in target or not, especially after a "difficult" meal that required some guesswork and/or a combo bolus (such as mexican food at the restaurant). I often over-guess the meal a bit and plan on giving Mia a free snack if need be..a snack she is going to want either way.

If we eat at home on a regular school day, Mia has a snack or meal of sorts pretty much every 2-3 hours anyway, and the nurse always checks before a snack. I like to schedule Mia's tests 20-30 minutes before the next snack or meal, which gives us time to correct a low or a high in advance. Breakfeast continues to be the most challenging meal for us, so we often throw in an extra test here or there at 2- 2.5 hours post breakfeast, incl on the weekends.

So a normal day for us looks as follows:

6:30am test
6:50am breakfeast
9:50am test
10:15 snack
12:00 test
12:25 lunch
2:30 test
3:00 snack
5:00 test
5:30 dinner
7:30 test, snack if wanted

At night, we also test...but that could be a different thread all together :D.

Also, Mia started to test herself without me asking in between, which is great:D . I never discourage it..I think it is a wonderful step towards more independence.

We always test 2 hours post meal. It was what we were taught at the hospital and it's what we've done since then - I just assumed everyone did! The only time we do a correction is at mealtime, with the exception of that one incident when Cam was off-the-charts high for a few hours and then the endo said to give him a correction but it had to be 3 hours after his last shot.

This is interesting..... I wonder if I should give up some of the tests then....

Once again this place has given me something to think about!!! I swear I'd be lost without you guys!! :)

I cannot imagine not testing after 2 hours.

I don't test if I don't think there's a chance that I'll need to correct or that I'm hypo.
I barely have enough strips as is.

We only test before meals and bedtime and then we make sure it is 2 hours since his snack or dinner. And we have never been given instructions to correct highs. There was one time when he was not acting normal and I tested him and he was in the 500s so I called the endo and they told me how much to give him.

And we also have been testing other times because it has gotten nice out and we are outside more playing and want to make sure he isn't going low.

some days we test an hour after eating but usually always 2, it depends if kid is going on soccer field or some other high output activity. Also, if at the two hour mark we want to make sure Megan is within acceptable ranges and not something like 15 or over 200 because that would mean we didn't give enough insulin to cover meal

Here is our usual testing routine:

before breakfast 8:00 am
before lunch (at school) 11:00 am
before recess 2:00 pm
before dinner 6:30 pm (often varies due to sporting events)
before bedtime 8:30-9:00 pm
before I go to bed 11:00 pm

usually a 2:00 or 3:00 am check, because he often has evening baseball games which tends to give him lows hours later. Once in a while, I'll skip this and get a full nights sleep!

Some days we'll add extra checks depending on his activities, or if he is running high/low, or if he is sick. It's usually 6-9 per day.
