IT WENT GREAT! :D

We are still a year out - but have had some bad reports from local families with D children, so we thought we had better get a head start and see what things were like.. New principal and we were somewhat educated on what our rights were (thanks Tamara Gamble and others on this forum)!! Right now we think things will go smoothly and the school will be very accomadating! Some changes are already being implemented, not because of us - but due to a Healthier School Coalition, yeah!!

One question though, and the principal wasn't sure but was looking into it - our school has a contract nurse that visits a few times a month, and on a daily basis there are school health aides.. Our son is currently doing MDI - can an aide legally give an injection? I'm hoping we might be on the pump by then, but we'll see. I was just curious...and thought I might get an answer here faster!

I am so happy for you...we recently had a visit with a new school and today we got to speak with the nurse at length and it too went very well. I am glad for you...we have enough to deal with it's nice to catch a little break now and then!

Our school health aide said No. She can oversee an injection and double check all is correct but she can not physically administer the injection. As far as the pump, from my discussion with our aide, she can oversee and double check amounts as long as she doesn't administer the actual dose.

This is info from the state of WI: http://dhfs.wisconsin.gov/health/diabetes/Cons_resources.htm

Go to page 50 of this document (which is page 46 of the PDF: http://dhfs.wisconsin.gov/health/diabetes/pdf_files/resources/PPH43063_DBchildrenResGuide.pdf

It is the FAQ which discusses the role of the nurses. It seems that if they cannot delegate for some reason then the school is REQUIRED to hire a nurse. It says it rather plainly right there in your own state's document. That is for Wisconsin. Perhaps there is some info in there that says specifically a nurse can delegate insulin injections- you can look for it. Also check out what the policies are of your local school - but they school has to meet this minimum requirement. They cannot refuse to do so - they can do better but not worse.
