I attended a local adult support group meeting last week and they were discussing these two drugs. Byetta is for type 2s and Symlin is for both type 1 and type 2. Both are injections: Byetta twice a day and Symlin any time that more than a certain amount of grams of carb is eaten (something like 15g?) Byetta works by stimulating your pancreas to release its own insulin, Symlin slows gastric emptying which helps keep the postprandial bgs down (and once there is nothing left for it to work on, it stops, so it won't cause hypos). Byetta can be used with metformin in fact, they said you get the best results when it is used in combination (I believe it can be used together with Symlin as well). Both Symlin and Byetta help the user lose weight.
Anyway...just thought I'd share! :)

Has anyone heard of diamoxol (formerly known as diabeticen) which is supposedly "natural" and can be taken in conjuction with insulin? It is supposed to help the pancreas heal itself and see a significant drop in glucose levels.

I don't know anything about this drug but I do know that (in Type I) the pancreas cannot heal itself. Once the cells are destroyed they are gone and the pancreas does not produce more. Maybe it is different for type II. BTW I have family in Muskegon, it is beautiful up there! Hope this helps!

There is a theory, that is supported by research, that the pancreas of a Type 1 is capable of producing insulin. The problem is the beta cells are destroyed almost before they start producing insulin. If the cells that are constanting destroying the beta cells could be inhibited, the beta cells would start growing again and producing insulin.

This is my understanding of the work of researcher Denise Faustman. This site explains it here: http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/faustman.htm.

Diamoxol is a fraud.

Spelling is "Diamaxol"

Anyone trying to sell you a "natural cure" or "natural treatment" is promoting something that has no basis in science.
