I am aware that many teens and young adults with type 1 need to use ACE Inhibitors, but am curious as to when these are started. Is there a set time after dx that many find the need arises or is it just a random thing?
How many of you have children who are using these or are using them yourself, what was your doctors rationale for beginning them, and at what stage after dx were they begun?

Our clinic doesn't start them on an ACE inhibitor (there are also ARB's btw) unless they start having elevated microalbumin and/or protein in the urine. They start testing 5yrs after dx or once they are teens, whichever comes first.

My daughter was diagnosed 2 years ago, at age 12. She just started ACE Inhibitors due to protein in the urine during last lab tests. This is mostly caused by trouble maintaining good BG control, lots of highs.
Good Luck!

I actually started on ACE Inhibitors not for my diabetes but due to hypertension. I never really had a problem with high blood pressure, but when I went to the endo's office for a 3mo. visit about 4 years ago, my blood pressure was 260/140. The endo couldnt believe it and thought the machine was wrong, so she went to another room and got another one. Pressure was still 260/140 in both arms and 240/140 in both legs. She immediately wrote a prescription for Lisinopril 10mg, and I have been on it ever since. Recently went up to 20mg when my BP stayed in the 140/xx range consistently. Now blood pressures are 115/xx.

When my son was 12, he had protein in the spot check done at the endo's office. We then did two 24 hour collections which also showed protein. He was put on a low dose ace inhibitor. After a year, his urine tests still show some protein, but it is coming down albeit, very slowly.

He shouldnt still be showing protein after a year on an ACE Inhibitor. I dont know what he is taking or his dose, but I know they started me off at 10mg Lisinopril, and upped it to 20mg when I was stil showing protein and my BP was still high (150/100). Protein is normal now (<30), and BP is normal as well (115/xx)

Thanks. I wondered about this. He has an endo appointment this week and I will ask about it. My son is on a very low dose - 5 mg of the generic version Quinapril.

Philip's microalbuminia is under control. Yesterdat, the lab showed that the ratio of creatine and microalbume to be in an acceptable range. I suspect that it was brought under control with the medication as well as a lower A1c. He was 6.9 yesterday as opposed to 7.9 a year ago. Within that year, he has started on the pump.
I guess that the combination of the Accupril and lower BG values helped pull this under control.
