As you can tell (from my earlier two posts today we are new to this diabetes thing:) ). My 3yo was diagnosed in February. I love the experiences and information everyone provides here. I find sometimes though after I read posts, I have so many more questions!
So here's another...My daughter is on lantus once/day and humolog with each meal/snack. to gauge how the insulin and I:C is working, do people typically check the kids 2 or 3 hrs after injection? Or not at all?
I know different foods can cause a peak sooner or later than would be expected but havent' yet figured this out.
thanks

My son Cameron is on Humalog 3 x a day (at meals-not snacks) and Lantus at bedtime and we always check his #'s 2 hours after eating (testing before meals is a given). For this reason, we try our best to have dinner by 6 pm at the latest so he can test at 8 and then have his snack before bed and Lantus at 9.

We were told that the best way to check I:C is to test 2 hours post meal. By the way ... welcome to the board! :D

So even though the humalog hasn't peaked yet, you still check 2 hr after the dose???????????
We were told when we switched to lantus that we didn't have to give her a snack at bedtime, that it was her choice if she was hungry.

Actually Humalog's peak activity is 30-90 minutes, but it lasts 3-4 hours. Also if you give the injection 10-15 minutes before a meal (as long as the blood sugar is not low) this can reduce a post meal spike.

You should be checking her two hours post to see if insulin to carb is right. You can't do another injection at that time due to the fact that the insulin is still working but you can check. There's a difference. Just wanted to clarify. Welcome aboard.
