hi everyone i am fairly new here, even though my daughter is 6 and had type 1 since 16 months old. i really enjoy this site alot of good info. my question is that we live in florida and were looking to move to asheville nc. we just came home. our daughters numbers before we left were around 250 after leaving they gradually came down we had to reduce her insulin while up there. we went from 13 3/4 units(combined both insulins) in the am to 4 units in the am. and in the evening from 3 units to 1/2 unit. could it be from the altitude? since we have been home her numbers are going back up. during the trip just a trace of keytones appeared then dissappeared. it seems every time we go up there her numbers go low and we have to reduce her insulin. has anyone had this to deal with before? i'm nervous about going out to town again. we really want to move up there, but i'm nervous. does anyone have any advice? thank you dreama:p

We live in Asheville so I am not sure if the altitude has any effects as were always here. We have taken him to the beach and he had pretty large bs swings while away from home, but that most likely was the excitement. It may just be that your dd reacts to the stress and excitement of travel with lows, knowing this you can be prepared in the future with lots of sugar to treat lows and even reducing insulin to reduce the risk. Our endo had use reduce Zeb's I:C and lantus (by 50%) when we went to the beach to avoid lows and we ended up actually increasing them half way through the trip because he started to run high.
Good luck. We love our pedi endo and staff and have a pretty good parents and kids support group at the clinic monthly.

thank you for responding. we love it up there. i thought it might be car sickness or motion sickness since she isn't use to the curvy roads, everytime that we have gone up there she has had low lows, she complained about her belly hurting. we left earlier than we were planning to to come home. last time we ended up in the er in melbourne, fl. on our way back. we didn' want to take any chances this time. i thought sitting in the car without the normal exericse she is use to would make her numbers go up, but just when i think i understand a reason for her numbers, they do the opposite. i just wish there was a math problem that could solve it.
