i have one question. do children who are type 1 diabetic, start early in life with puberty. my daughter is 8 now, when she had her first checkup with her endo, he checked for signs of puberty. i didnt ask. so does anyone know about this.?

I don't think it necessarily has to do just with D. My dd 9 hasn't had any such checks in the 2 years since DX. But my older dd non D did start her period in 5th grade at 10 3 days shy of her 11th bday. They say the other physical stuff can start up too 2 years prior....My D child almost 10 has showed no signs.

Hmmh....interesting....I started VERY late, like 15 or 16, but hey I'm 5'9" now so who cares.

My sister non d's onset was at age nine. Looking back, everything was early for her. She got so tall, so fast. She was her full height by fifth grade poor thing. Not so easy to be the tallest in your class for years but she's 5'5" now.

Is it linked? I don't know. I have never heard of this being linked but I didn't know having an autoimmune disease myself would cause my children to be linked to this disease either.

I was like 13..kept telling my older dd she would probably expect it around 8th grade...I had to eat my words. When you mix in my hubbies genes it means an earlier puberty....She was the youngest in her class and the first to get her period....And she was done growing by 7th grade 5'4"....

Everything I have read says that if anything kids with D generally hit puberty later, not earlier.

This was probably the only "lighter side" to our first two days of diagnosis. Me, Alex, Alex's mother, Alex's stepmother and Alex's grandmother all in the an exam room. Endo looked at the women in the room and did the "you may want to step out for a second", obvious she was going to do some type of maturation/puberty exam.

(preface, Alex started puberty @ 10, girl watching @ 12. Thinks he's ready to stud at 14. Endo looks to be 27-28 and drop deap beautiful)

Anyway, women leave the room, Alex laying on a table with endo's back to me. Alex arches back, she slides his pants off.

Now, in the midst of the most stressful 48hrs of my life, my son peers behind the back of the endo, smiles from ear to ear, and raises his eyebrows up and down several times really fast.

I'm so proud

BARRY!! OMG!!! :D I think I'm glad I have girls....!!
I crack up whenever I see your avatar. I think of Weird Al's song, "Pancreas"!

Regarding the OP: I would think uncontrolled or undiagnosed T1D would delay puberty, as the entire metabolic/hormonal system is a bit "off" from the lack of sufficient insulin.

Like others have said, I do think a lot of it depends on genetics. I was a bit of an 'early bloomer' and leveled off in 7th grade. My D daughter was so tiny and little most of her life, but now that she's on insulin she has REALLY began to grow and develop. She's gained 16 pounds at the last check and almost 3 inches in height. In addition, she is beginning to develop breast buds that were absent just a few months ago. While some of this is genetics and her age, I think the insulin has helped. I read that years ago, before good D care was established, people with T1D had stunted growth.
