Russman, Ben and Tay went on a jr high church retreat this weekend.
Ben has had a lot of lows this week, and some of them he wasn't sensing.
Russ has the glucose tabs, and rode in a different vehicle as Ben.
I had to explain Glucagon again before they left. At least they took it with them.
I packed all the insulin and syringes with an ice pack in Russ's backpack and told him he needed to keep it handy for dinner. It was one of the first loaded, at least he did dig out the novolog. I don't know what he did with the calorie king book. I wonder how he did counting carbs for dinner.
I know daddy will watch out for his boy, but it's really hard for me letting them go. I can't imagine Ben going without one of us.
This is the only place I knew someone would understand my worry.
Thanks
Mrs. Russman

Hi there, I must have missed this post somewhere along the lines. What a great opportunity for the boys! How heartwrenching for you! This stuff is so hard isn't it. The older they get. Yikes!

Tyler was eleven when I let him go for five days camping with his school. We did the same as you prepare, prepare, prepare. I found that after a few days I relaxed and with technology being what it is he would call me with that midnight reading and I was able to sleep at night.

I remember the first day I was a wreck. By the second day I realized how much time I spent preparing him for the next at school and responding to whatever his protocol was. By the third day, I was sipping Margarita's and enjoying the break.

He had such a good time. I am so glad that I let him go. I think it was good for both of us. I hope all goes well. Please read my post: Little signs he is never alone.

God Bless!

Tami

Hi,

I'm sure they will have a ball but I also sure know the worry of being the one left behind.

I do wonder though: how come your son didn't have his glucose tabs with him in the bus/car? Aaron has a roll in his pocket at all times -- it's part of getting dressed for him now.

Mrs. Russman....Please let us know how the weekend went. It is especially hard letting go those first few times. Hopefully he and his dad had a great trip, and kept decent numbers!

My son is also on a retreat this weekend with his youth group. He's almost 15 and I was very nervous to let him go....
I spoke to him on friday at dinner, and on sat morning he text messaged me 112..
he was supposed to call me on Sat night between 11-midnight, and let me know how his #'s were. He never called and hasnt answered his cell.I know he must be having a wonderful time, but feel he needs to be a bit more responsible to me. I'm gonna kill him...
his cell rings and he doesn't answer ..
> do I ground him for life when he returns???

They made it home late last night. Only two lows and no highs. He was a little low when they got home. They did have a great time.
Since he was with Dad, I didn't have them call, I knew they would call if they had a problem. It was really hard for me not to call and check up though.
Ben didn't have his tabs with him, because he only had room in his single pocket for his monitor although there were a couple of rolls of smarties in his monitor case.

Stacey, go easy on him, I'm sure he is really distracted. ;)
