My son kayden is 19 monthes old ,started drink way to much a total daily of 12-15 8oz bottles pluss 5-8 glasses of water or juice ! My doctor says it sounds like type 1 Diabetes as he's lost weight to.asked for a urin sample friday ,we just recived a call today "monday" stating they want another one a.s.a.p

My question would be as i dont know if he does would anyone eles know what could cause kayden to drink way to much ? he wakes in the middle of the 2-3 times for a drink. he wets the bed even after being changed 3 times in the night. the diet personal came in telling me no way a kid a can drink that much as a parent you should not give him it. He just starts Screaming runs to the frige and bangs the door.. as soon as she finished saying that she got fed up and gave him a drink "and said i dont know what to say "

I feel like a bad parent to let him drink that much ,he just crys real tears and screams !! i just dont know

You are not being a bad parent. The pediatrician shouldn't need to ask for another sample -- unless they spilled the first one.

Go ahead and give your child water if he wants it. You are not being a bad parent. I would avoid the juice.

Thirst is a #1 symptom of diabetes. Your pediatrician should take action today -- waiting does no good.

Kadensmom-
Don't ever think your a bother- if anyone of us could help you we sure would.
I'm with Amy, don't wait, take your son in to have him tested. No one wants to scare you- the day my child was diagnosed is so fresh in my mind, and I wish I wouldn't have waited.
Something another mother posted on another thread....

Make sure to watch for these signs of DKA. If he shows any of these symptoms go to the ER:
Vomiting
Sweet (fruity) odor to breath
Dry Mouth
Drowsiness
Deep Breathing

Thirst, urination, weight loss- Red flags for diabetes! Don't wait Take action now! If you know of anyone who is a diabetic or has access to a blood tester you could test your child yourself.
I didnt check to see where your from but if you live near me I'll be right over and you can use ours!

This sounds like my daughter before her diagnosis. She would throw fits if I didn't give her water in the middle of the night. It was dramatic how much she needed water. If this is Diabetes it is important to keep letting your son drink. The fluids will aid in flushing glucose and ketones from his body.

I gave this advice to another parent in another thread and I will give it to you. If you are concerned that your son has diabetes and the Dr. doesn't seem to be acting, you can go to your pharmacy and ask for Ketodiastix (http://www.fifty50pharmacy.com/index.mvc?page=F5/PROD/KEDI50). They are little sticks that test for sugar and ketones in the urine (both of which may be present with a person who has diabetes). If they don't have ketodistix ask for ketostix (http://www.fifty50pharmacy.com/index.mvc?page=F5/PROD/TestStrips/KTSTIX50). Put a cotton ball in your sons diaper and after he has urinated you can squeeze the urine from the ball and dip the stick into the urine. Follow the directions in the packaging for measuring ketone and glucose levels. If anything is out of the normal range, I would immediately call your Dr. to report the readings and tell them that you would like to speak with a Dr. immediately or you will be headed to the ER with your son.

Hopefully it isn't diabetes. I am crossing my fingers for you.

I'm embarrassed to say:( , when my daughter started wetting the bed before diagnosis, I kept drinks away from her from a certain time at night. I found her going in the bathroom and shutting the door (which was out of character for her) and I found that she was sneaking water from the bathtub faucet. :(
I was later told by the doctor that so much drinking is what was keeping her from getting sicker:eek: , it was what her body was telling her to do.

You are definitely not a bother. Everyone is welcome here to this forum. My daughter's first symptoms were extreme thirst and frequent urination prior to diagnosis. Good luck. I hope your physician figures out your son's symptoms very quickly. :)

Lanae, don't feel bad. I kept water from my daughter at first, too. That's what all the parenting books say to do! They say that if your child is wetting the bed at night to not allow drinks after a certain time. I was raised in a house with a parent who was type 1 and my parents were always asking me if I was thirsty or was peeing too much, so you would think I would have realized what was up. I did eventually, after she actually threw a fit for water (fit throwing was not her style). At that point I knew it had to be a diabetes. I asked my dad about it and he, who had had type 1 for 48 years at that point, said that he didn't think it was diabetes. We can all be fooled, even those of us who know what to look for!

I'm not a Cher fan, but I hear that song over and over in my head. "If I could turn back time; if I could find a way...

That was exactly what Kaylee was doing, drink after drink after drink and if she didn't get it, she'd have the biggest fit.. if your son starts throwing up, or having belly aches, please get him to the ER as soon as you can.. if you haven't heard from the dr again, please call them and tell them you are coming in.. they shouldn't need to do another sample, unless they screwed up the first one..

keep us posted, and I hope he's OK!

First of all Kayden needs the fluids replaced because if he is type 1 he is spilling sugar through his urine and is becoming dehydrated as a result and has to replace the liquids. Also if he drinking that much I am almost positive it is Diabetes. I will keep you and your son in my prayers. Please keep us informed. Remember you are a wonderful mother. You have done nothing wrong.
If Kayden starts getting belly aches or starts looking pale, get him to the ER and fast. You have every right to be concerned. Let him have what he wants to drink except for sugared drinks. He needs the fluids.
