I could use some brainstorming help here. As I mentioned, Gabriel, 6, is on the Omnipod. Everything is going great with 1 exception...he takes karate and his sensei is concerned about the pod. So far he has not allowed Gabriel to spark which is a big dissapointment for him. The teacher would like some kind of cushion to be worn while G. is in class. His issues are kicks which could dislodge the pod and kicks which could hurt Gabriel more because of the hard edges of pod. To me these just seem like issues that could occur in any number of circumstances and are just part of wearing a pump. But we're trying to work with the teacher...

so, any ideas? The only ideas so far have been taping the plastic cup of an athletic supporter over it (fairly ridiculous and way too big IMHO) or taping a sponge over it (it isn't clear to me that this would do anything other than annoy G). I'm stumped.

thanks,

Kirsten

I'm sure you could buy a piece of foam and cut it to fit a pod. I would explain to the sensei that it really is not a big deal even if the pod is knocked completely off it is by no means an emergency situation. Can you work pod change around karate? That is remove the pod before class and replace it with a new one after class? Not that I think that is necessary...

I have read about kids in sports using ace bandages for extra protection. I am not sure if it would work with karate or the Omnipod but I thought I would offer the thought anyway.

Good Luck.

I have been advised from an athletic trainer to use football pads. My son is on the minimed pump. He plays flag football. Though there isn't any tackling (looks like tackling to me  ) the trainer suggested the football pads. Outline the pump - pod in your case - on the pad and cut out. You can fit the football pad over the pod and use an ace bandage for extra protection. Might help keep the pod from being "kicked" off too.

Thanks for the ideas. We saw our nurse educator today and she gave us a letter approving his participation in any sport without restriction. Hopefull that will take care of it.

This company makes tee-shirts with the pocket on the back for toddlers. It might not be a bad idea to see if they can or have one that it a youth size. I bet not having it on his hip or front would be a solution
