ok, i know this sounds completely ridiculous! I am so new to all this diabetes stuff (my daughter just diagnosed 3 weeks ago, and even that seems iffy). I have been concerned about my younger boys. Today my 5 year old suddenly started screaming of an itchy/painful thumb. I examined it to see if a bug had bit it or if it had any scratches...nothing to the naked eye escept it wasreally red. So, as I love turning to my google button to find out what it could be, guess what one of the possibilities was that popped up? Yep, diabetes. So strange. Has anybody heard of itch thumb being associated with diabetes? If so, in what context.
Also, I haven't been able to get my normal stuff done because this diabetes research is consuming me. I just want answers so bad, but I am neglecting my daily responsibilities. Any advice?

I have never heard of this as a symptom of D. My guess is that they might potentially attribute this as a symptom of neuropathy, which is a D complication. However, it is not likely you would see neuropathy in a person with emerging D, but rather in someone who has lived with D for a while.

Actually it is a symptom of Diabetes but it is not mentioned very much. I would put some cortisone cream on his thumb and see if that clears it up. Maybe he got a bug bite and the redness is a sign of that. It is not a major symptom like frequent thirst and urination, but it can be a symptom. That and repeated infections can also be a symptom or infections that take longer than usual to clear up. If it doesn't clear up I would get him to the doctor and get him on antibiotics. It could be an infection that needs treating.
One thing that itches and hurts at the same time is cellulitis. That needs to be treated with antibiotics immediately and topical antbiotics will not work.
