View Full Version : I have a question

I have a two year old little boy that I'm concerned about. He's always been on the small side, he's very tall for his age and weighs 30lbs. I know to most he's in the middle but if you were to see my other 4 children you would understand my concern. Also for the past 2 months he seems to always be thirsty. I can give him a glass of water and two minutes later he's crying for something else to drink. He's constantly going to the bathroom and has recently started bed wetting. We have a family history of diabetes. My maternal aunt and grandmother had Type 1 (both are deceased) and my sister has insulin resistance. Do I have a reason to be concerned? I'm sorry to sound so clueless but I honestly don't know if I will be wasting my time bringing him to the pediatrician. I personally have never had to deal with anything like this so I searched the internet for a group of people who could possibly help me.

Thank you,
Debbie

Debbie,

I'm glad you found us & hope we can be of some help. From what you've said I would DEFINITELY get this checked out. The signs you are saying were what we saw. It may or may not be diabetes, but just the fact that this is not "normal" for him would warrant me to get him to the doctor. Let me follow that up with ASAP. IF it is diabetes the sooner you can get it under control, the better. Too many people miss signs and kids can get very sick very quickly.

Please keep us updated & you all will be in my prayers!

Your hitting on a lot of symptoms that my daughter had when she was diagnosed. We had at least 7 pounds of weight loss and didn't even realize it. Potty trained and didn't have accidents up until 6 weeks before diagnoses. She was Thirsty beyond belief! The only symptom I can add is my daughter had terrible stomach pain. IF IN DOUBT, CHECK IT OUT! I hope your son isn't diagnosed with D!

Don't wait, go have him tested! It's Friday, don't wait till Monday.
Let us know, and I'll have you in my prayers! Good luck!

Thank you so much for the quick reply! You hit on another symptom that he's had as well that I didn't even think of or wouldn't associate with this. For about the past 3 weeks or so he's been complaining that his tummy hurt too. I just called his pediatrician and they can fit him in on Wednesday. I have our peds cell number and home phone number I think I'll give her a call tonight to see if I can bring him in earlier. She's really great and I know she'll do what is necessary to figure this out. Thank you again so much!! I really glad I found you guys.

Debbie,

I'm praying it's something that a simple antibiotic or something will cure, but in case it's not I'm urging you to not wait that long. I don't mean to worry you any more than you already are, but the sooner the better, just in case. Wednesday is a long way away... I'm not "nagging," just concerned...

Debbie-
Please call explain to the doctors office his symptoms and the history in your family and be seen today- don't drag this out over the weekend. Kids can become very sick very quickly.
If your son turns out to be negative for Diabetes, gladly place the blame on me for wasting your time.
Good luck and thinking of you!

Debbie-

If nothing else- do you know someone with a blood sugar monitor that you can use to check his blood sugar?

Please believe me when I say that no one here is trying to scare you- but we have all had our own child experience the same symptoms- and for some of us, waiting the weekend would have been way too long to go.

Our thoughts, prayers and support is with you! I hope it is just a bug!

Take him to the ER if your doctor cannot see you until Wednesday...they can at least do a blood sugar check there for sure.

I agree, this CANNOT WAIT until next week! Hailey was showing symptoms for a while but once things got bad they went down hill VERY QUICKLY. Take him to the ER right now! If you are wrong you are only out your copay and maybe a couple of odds looks from Dr's but with a family history like that and those symptoms you should be taking this VERY seriously. I am not trying to scare you at all! I just do not want you to have to go through what we did 6 months ago today :cwds:

You do have a reason to be concerned. Given the signs, and your family history, I am glad you made an appointment. We also were given an appointment about a week after calling the pedi with concerns about bed wetting and frequent thirst (after having noticed and ignored symptoms for several weeks...we had no family history, and really did not suspect D). When we finally went to the appointment, we were sent DIRECTLY to the hospital where we spent the next 3 days. (My son never seemed sick in any way). As others have said, kids can go from bad to worse very quickly if they enter diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). If you plan to keep your original pedi appt., PLEASE keep a very close eye on your son, and do not hesitate to take him to an emergency room if you sense that something is not right!

Given the information, you are NOT wasting anybody's time (yours or the docs) to have your son evaluated.

Debbie-- one more vote here for taking him in ASAP. My dd was caught pretty early on, and had no issues, nothing high but her blood sugar when we got her in the ER. However, when I was diagnosed, we were told I was this close to being comatose.

I'm sorry if I am scaring you, but honestly, I'd much rather be on the safe side!!! Like the others said, I don't mean to scare, but if it moves you to action, that's good. I hope you can soon report back to us that he does NOT have diabetes.

The parents are absolutely right on this. Get your child checked right away. If he starts to get worse or seems very sick go to the emergency room immediately. With your family history this is nothing to play around with. It is better to be safe than sorry. Let us know how things go. We all care for you.

Debbie- I agree with the others who suggest you not wait until Wednesday. People with undiagnosed diabetes can go downhill so quickly!

A couple of things:

First, you can go to your pharmacy and ask for Ketodiastix (http://www.fifty50pharmacy.com/index.mvc?page=F5/PROD/KEDI50). They are little sticks that test for sugar and ketones in the urine. I presume your son is potty trained based upon what you said about bed wetting. If so you can have him pee directly on the strip, or he can pee in a cup and you can dip the stick and measure. If anything is out of the normal range, go directly to the ER, do NOT wait until Wednesday.

Second, make sure to watch for these signs of DKA. If he shows any of these symptoms go to the ER:

Vomiting
Sweet (fruity) odor to breath
Dry Mouth
Drowsiness
Deep Breathing

Dont wait! I cant stress this enough! My son was experiencing the same things I called the Pediatrician(in the evening) told him I thought it might be Diabetes he told me he didnt think it was. He thought it was a medication my son was on and that it was causing cotton mouth. The next day he was drinking and urinating even more. I demanded to be seen and they hesitantly agreed to see him the next morning where he tested positive for strep throat the Dr. said it was the medication and the strep throat that was causing him to be so thirsty thus causing him to urinate more frequently. I still insisted they test his glucose and reluctantly they agreed and guess what? My sons glucose was well over 700, had to be airlifted by life flight to the nearest childrens hospital where we spent the next 3 days, he was in ketoacidosis and almost comatosed.
My father 34yrs ago was diagnosed Diabetic his symptoms were the same excessive drinking and urination!!
Better to be safe Dont' wait!!!!

to have made a "Wednesday Appointment" for this.

It's as if they responded to a middle age man like me, reporting "painful left arm, shortness of breath, chest and stomach pain" (i.e., heart attack) by saying,

Well, we just had a cancellation on next Monday, won't that great?

No it wouldn't. (Even if I didn't die in the next few hours, massive amounts of heart tissue would be dead by then.) This is definitely ER stuff, of IMMEDIATE importance. I hope that you're NOT still here to read this. ;)

I am just 12 years old but i believe the reason nothing has been replied is because mrs. debbie is probably more worried than her son she needs time to settle. my mom was definitely more worried than i was even before i had officially been diagnosed but you all are right it would be nice to hear
