View Full Version : No wonder there is so much confusion

I just recently found out Halle Berry has diabetes. But when I googled the topic, half the sites I found said she is type 2 and the other half said she is type 1. There is even a USA today article quoting her as saying, "I have type 2 diabetes". So which is it? I can't think of a better example of misinformation about the types of diabetes when the media can't even consistently report the truth accurately. I found an old thread here where people were saying she is definitely type 1 and on the pump, but I can't find this information anywhere else. So what's the skinny?

Halle Berry is not very open about her diabetes. I am not sure what type she has as this topic of conversation often comes up.

I guess I can understand the need for privacy when in the public eye all of the time, but it intrigues me that she is a diabetes advocate and she is not open about it.

I read a story from her about this awhile ago-like a year or more. And I wonder if she may be a type 1.5? She did not say but said she does not take insulin but stricktly controls her eating. I seem to recall that she said she did take insulin originally but not anymore. She was not clear of her type in the article either.

I too have seen some articles referring to Halle Berry and diabetes. And, also have searched on the internet to whether she was T1 or T2 - and am just as confused. I read where she went into a 7 day diabetic coma - passed out on a movie set and that is how she found out she was a diabetic. Whether T1 or T2 I have never seen her talk openly about it. But most of the articles I read did all mention that she "has it under control" and if she's not taking insulin that tells me it's T2 - right?!

Some articles say T1 and others say T2. She was diagnosed in 1989, which would have put her at about 22 years old, she is very slender, and most articles mentioned insulin injections, which all leads me to think type 1.

I understand she was diagnosed with type 1 in 1989. She does not speak about it very much.

I had the same problem trying to find out. I read an article where she said she controlled it with natural herbs, then one where she said she had to take insulin, one that said she was Type 1, another that said she was Type 2. There's even been speculation she could have the rare Type 1b (http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/dictionary/t.htm). I think maybe she is not even sure herself.

I've read it every which way, and I am starting to get a little irritated with the lady. I understand wanting privacy, but for goodness' sake, it's NOT something that comes along with celebrity status! She is in SUCH a great position to be an advocate for diabetes, whichever type she has, and every article I've read about her lately has not included one reference to diabetes. (save the ones I've found typing "halle berry+diabetes" into search engines...)

I read in article years ago that she is T1 and decided not to use pump therapy because of her acting, that the pump would make it a little hard to do most of her scenes.( ie, would see the sight location) that she is MDI. but VERY private about it.

Thanks for that info, I too had wondered exactly what type she had. And I too had wondered if she was type 1 how she controlled it.

and I do believe she is involved with the Barbara Davis Center's Carousel of Hope each year. :)

Yeah, I saw an article about that. But this very same article was the one where they quoted her as saying "I have type 2 diabetes." This is why I am so utterly confused. It would make sense that she has type 1, especially supporting Carousel of Hope, but it seems that a lot of articles out there report her as type 2. I wonder if these reporters just assume it is type 2 because she was diagnosed as an adult. I also read a photo caption (I think in the same article as the Carousel of Hope thing) that said that she had "adult onset diabetes". That is so ambiguous, since a person can have type 1 and still have adult onset.
