I took Alex to the band meeting last night. He got to see many of his friends at his old school while he was there. He chose the viola and got to try playing it when he was there. I think that he is going to do well.
What made me a very happy mom is that he got the instrument scholarship so the cost is going to be minimal for me. I was concerned about the cost.
His teacher recognized me from high school. She was two years ahead of me and her mother taught me in 9th grade literature.
I think the is going to go very well.

In an orchestra, there are 4 types of stringed instruments: violin, viola, cello and bass. These go from smaller to larger. The violin is the highest pitched instrument (called the fiddle in other groups). The viola is held like a violin under the chin, but is larger and makes a darker sound. The notes don't go as high as the violin but go lower.
The cello and bass are set on the floor and sound much lower than violin or viola. A cellist sits to play and string bass stands or sits on a stool.

That's great! Playing an instrument is really good for kids. They learn many skills needed in school plus it's usually a great social experience.

A viola looks like a violin but is bigger but is played like a violin.
