Generex Oral-lyn™ is a liquid formulation of regular human insulin that is delivered to the buccal mucosa by way of the RapidMist™ device, where absorption is limited to the mouth with no entry into the lungs. The rich vascularity of the buccal mucosa allows for much faster absorption of insulin.

I'd want to know if there are any risks of developing oral cancer or other problems from putting a hormone with growth properties into the cheek.

Excellent point on the hormone spray going into the mouth.

I was surprised that I have not heard of this on the news or on any of the current diabetes websites. Of course we are very new to this our 4 year just started Novolog this past December 2005 She is still in the honeymoon phase and not using Lantus yet. We have been doing a lot of research on the pump and for sure will go to that when she is ready for that next step in her treatment.

Oral insulin (absorbed in the mouth, not taken as a pill) is still not approved by the FDA for use in the US. Like inhaled insulin, which is approved, oral insulin will provide an alternative delivery method for fast-acting insulin to cover mealtime carbohydrates.

Neither inhaled nor oral insulin is long acting, so users who have type 1 diabetes will still need to take injections of a basal insulin such as Lantus or Levemir.

Based on the most recent data presented at the ADA's 2005 Scientific Sessions, Oral-lyn still needs work, but I see no reason that the company will not succeed. See:
