Hello! My son was recently diagnosed (11/06). We see our endo next month for the third time and of course, I have tons of questions for him. I am hoping to get started pumping asap and also, I am wondering how everyone was able to get the continuous glucose monitoring for their kids (who are less than 7 years old). I see that one is now approved for 7 years and older but I WANT ONE!!! I would appreciate any information and advice you can offer!!! Thanks so much...

Hi,
Sorry to hear that your child is also dx'ed. You would need to speak to your endo to get it prescribed. Are you using an insulin pump already? In case your dr is not willing at all, consider looking for another doc.
We have a 2.5 yr old who was diagnosed 6 mo ago. We ordered the Guardian RT for him on Friday and hope to start in a week or two.
Good luck.

Getting on the pump for your 2 year old is a great idea. Teagan's 2 and was on the pump about 6 weeks before her 2nd birthday. We love it. It has helped to stablize her numbers and at her last endo visit, her A1Cs were down to 7.1. And that after only 5 weeks on the pump.
As for the CGMS, our endo highly recommended one for Teagan late last year before the MiniLink was out. We looked into it and our endo sent a letter of medical neccesity to Medtronic and our insurance. We didn't pursue anything at the time, but as soon as the MiniLink came out, my husband called Medtronic to inquire how to obtain one, and they told him our insurance company was actually covering them! :) So now we have one and will go through training next week.
Our endo basically said that the CGMS will help us to catch the highs and lows faster so we can correct before her BGs are out of control. The lows are most dangerous since Teagan can't tell us when she's low and often doesn't show any sign of being low so the CGMS should help.
Good luck! Keep us posted.
