there was a survey done that shows alot of ingnorance about diabetes. it show that alot of people dont know the difference between type 1 and type 2 . that alot of people thought that there was a cure for type 1 , and which i believe, because everyone that i talk to thinks that it can be reversed by diet. unbelievable. i wish Oprah will have something on this. it would be nice. anyway you can find this at Arco Max.com

this is a huge problem.. not many of the 'everyday' public knows what type 1 is... they don't know the difference between type 1 and 2.. I have to admit until my dd was dx I did not know the difference either.. I knew some basic stuff but nothing like I know now.. i was totally confused on what type 1 and hypoglycemia was.. that actually confused me even more LOL.. I think there needs to be a big effort in educating people in general.. they don't need to know the entire scoop.. but the basics should be out there:)

We should bombard Oprah with emails to do a show ;) Everyone watches Oprah LOL I had no clue about type 1 myself until I became a mom of a child with D. Everything that I knew before had to do with type 2 and I am a volunteer Emt and worked as a CNA in the past :O with 1 year of nursing school! Everything I was taught was focused on type 2 and has very little to do with type 1

yeah i have already sent an email to oprah. telling them it will be a great forum to inform everyone about this disease that is effecting many families and to bring attention to the jdrf who needs funding to find a cure for this. so i tell everyone out there who reads this to write to oprah.

My schedule is really hectic today, but I would also send that email to the CBS Evening News, ABC World News Tonight, and NBC Nightly News, to bring national attention, and BLAST the country with TECHNICALLY ACCURATE, CORRECT information. Maybe get them to go around the streets of NYC and quickly ask people on camera, what is the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. I bet the lack of knowledge and misinformation would be alarming.

WOW! I had this conversation with some people I know last week after yet another atricle appeared in our local paper about D and it was all about type 2 but no where did it mention that it was type 2 or that there were different types. I ended up writing a letter to the editor of the paper. The last time there was an atricle I wrote to the author of the article about this same issue. This an nutrition information are my current focus. I have been emailing places that we like to eat at and asking about this information.

I too wish that there was more information out there about type 1 and the differences and that even in type 1 there are so many differences that there is no one size fits all treatment.

I do not watch TV but would be happy to join you all in emailing.

I had emailed Oprah last summer when my son was initially diagnosed because I thought even back then that she had a wonderful forum to educate the world about just what our children go through each day to survive! (Remember when she was afraid to have her ears pierced?) She did a show yesterday on Autism so maybe the time is ripe to email again.
Since there is no D anywhere in our families, all I really knew prior to my son's diagnosis was that there were 2 types and 1 required insulin. I just feel our children would be safer and less burdened with trying to explain D if we could educate the world about Type 1... Either that or change the name?

I wish they would go old-school again and just call it IDDM, or NIDDM.
Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM)/aka Type 1.
Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM)/aka Type 2.

A lot easier for people to understand than Type 1...2...6...9 lol... :D
