TOPIC: Ever feel overwhelmed or confused by all that diabetes requires? We know that recommendations for self-care are sometimes unclear, too complex or just too numerous. This presentation will introduce simple, practical tasks that can help make diabetes more manageable. These include: becoming knowledgeable about one's metabolic results, behavioral tips for reducing portion sizes, strategies for obtaining support from loved ones, and more.
SPEAKERS: Dr. Lawrence Fisher is one of the most well-known diabetes-knowledgeable psychologists in the United States. A professor in the Department of Family & Community Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, he devotes much of his time to working with people with diabetes, trying to understand how factors like depression and family conflict influence self-care. He has published over 125 articles on these topics and frequently lectures to doctor and patient groups around the country.
Dr. William H. Polonsky is an internationally known, Yale-trained clinical psychologist, certified diabetes educator, associate clinical professor at the University of California, San Diego, and author of Diabetes Burnout: What to Do When You Can’t Take It Anymore. Formerly the senior psychologist at the Joslin Diabetes Center, he is an active diabetes researcher and lectures to patients and provider groups throughout the world. .
