View Full Version : Could this be because of gluten?

We are always very careful of what Hayleigh eats. We really are.
On Friday her school had "Doughnuts with Dad". My husband had to work early that day and couldn't go, so instead he promised they would go to Culvers (a local place) for ice cream after school. Just the 2 of them.
He called from there and asked if Reese's Pieces were GF because that's what she wanted in her ice cream. I said yes but I would double check online. I looked and I found they are GF. So he got them for her. Later that day he brought home an "Allergy Info" list from Culvers. On it, it said that Reeses Pieces were NOT GF. I have no idea why their info is different than what I have found online. It also said Heath Bars are not GF when online says they are.
Keep in mind this was Friday afternoon. Last night Hayleigh started crying in pain saying her tummy hurt and it felt like she had eaten gluten. (Her biggest symptom before diagnoses was horrible stomach cramps) But could this be caused by what she ate on Friday afternoon? Would it really wait that long?
And where do I find the most accurate info on things like this? It's not like she gets this stuff often. But for future reference, I'd like to know why the info from online is different from what the restaurant has.

We've also found Reeses' Pieces to be gf although we avoid any ice cream toppings out just due to the cross-contamination issues. All those open bins crowded together just waiting for the glutenized toppings to fall into the g-f toppings.;)
Not sure about the timing, but I do remember reading something about it being hard to track down the culprit because the reaction time can vary dramatically.
Hope she feels better soon!!

I have a book that Tammy recommended called Gluten Free Grocery Shopping Guide. It has lists of foods that are ok to eat. Reeses Pieces are not listed meaning they are not safe. Reeses peanut butter cups are gluten free, so maybe there was some confusion there. I'm sorry that she got sick.

Since the ice cream place may order in bulk, I wonder if it comes from a different factory thus possibly changing the gluten status:confused:. I will say after calling the Hershey company to inquire about gluten in a product they are seriously concerned with covering their rears.
"Natural products come from nature (duh!), so we can't guarantee at some point that the ingredient did not come in contact with another gluten-containing product in nature." Kind of remind me of the warning to not use a hair dryer while in the bath tub.
Does the ice cream place have any toppings listed as gf?

I love the Cecelia's book:D, but it is not an exhaustive list. The ROCK gf candy list for Halloween and the Kids with Celiac book lists Reese's Pieces as gf as well as several web-sites that I checked. My oldest eats RP all the time and never has a problem.

I love it too because I still don't have enough confidence in myself on label reading. Guess I better get better at it, I am just so scared of contaminating my baby!!

I understand that fear!! It helped me when I got the list of companies who will always list WBRO on their labels - a lot of the major companies do. I think Al posted it on here awhile back. Then whenever my girls want something that I'm not sure about, we either call the company or research it on-line. I've made plenty of phone calls from Wal-Mart to various companies.

Thanks guys. I'll have to check that book out. It's been 2 years that we have been dealing with this, but there is still SO much to learn.
I never thought of the other toppings possibly contaminating the Reeses Pieces. Duh! But they did list M&M's as GF for the toppings. Maybe I should call them and see what the deal is.
It's so frustrating. I feel like we should never eat out! :(

I agree. I feel like it is always a gamble to go out. It definitely takes some of the fun away.
I'll be interested to hear what they say.

If I have contaminated food it can sometimes take upto 4 days for the symptoms. This is one of the frustrating things - sometimes I don't know where the source of contamination came from.
As for listings - recipes can change without notice and manufacturers are VERY slow at informing people. They don't have to point it out to you that they have changed anything. So we have to check lables very carefully every single shop.
Also note that gluten can be hidden inside any of the following:
flavouring
seasoning
dextrin
