Is there a list of celiac savvy pediatric and adult gastroenterologists anywhere?
I'm looking for a brilliant adult gastro doc between Boca Raton and West Palm Beach Florida for a classmate who has yet to be diagnosed, but wants to be tested...she wants to sleep all the time and has had stomach problems for years...being treated for IBS but the docs say they treat the symptoms and never figured out any cause.

Hi Ellen,
This may not answer your question directly...but I wanted to get this out here:
Celiac Medical Experts in the US (http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/internet/digestive-health/nutritionarticles/Sept0603.pdf)
Here's a contact that might get them pointed in the right direction. Local support groups are excellent resources to be aware of!
Coral Springs/Palm Beach - Support Group
Contacts: Janna Faulhaber and Stacey Galper
Raising Our Celiac Kids (R.O.C.K.) - Coral Springs/Palm Beach Chapter
Tel: (954) 255-7855
E-mail: Staceynagel@paxson.com
I'm continuing to look for docs in that area...

Thanks. On another list I got 2 recommendations for awesome doctors. I'm so grateful!
Another question...any statistics on first cousins of children with type 1 diabetes developing celiac?

Great! Glad you found some.
I'm not sure how the 1st cousin thing factors in, but I believe the current figures in the US are: 6-8% chance that a dx'ed T1DM has Celiac as well. Now...what the chances of developing it are...I don't know the figures...I'm sure they exist somewhere.
I suspect they certainly would be in a high risk category.
This can turn into a chicken or the egg situation...which comes 1st? Did they have CD before [and didn't catch it]...which then triggered T1DM - which was dx'ed. This is why there's a push for anyone dx'ed with DM to be screened for CD. Some places automatically do it, however some insurance companies squawk about saying that it's unnecessary. If they only knew that they'd save themselves a boat load of money by catching it now...instead of 5, 10 years down the road.
Here's some more stats for you:

There is a chart in the link that give stats for a Celiac developing another AI disease - this is the inverse of what you are looking for.
