Grace Vanterpool’s efforts in Slough led to a 30 per cent increase in the nmber of referrals to diabetes education clinics.
Yesterday she was named Nurse of the Year for 2006 by health secretary Patricia Hewitt.
Grace toured Slough in a double-decker bus offering blood testing and introduced Action Diabetes to the town.
She embarked on her campaign after fearing that many of those of south Asian origin in the town were going undiagnosed. She used an annual Asian festival to highlight the problem.
Grace, who now works in Hammersmith and Fulham, said: "I found that people were desperate for information about diabetes. Even if people came across information, it was generally in English only. I knew that much more had to be done."
Linda Thomas, Editor-in Chief of the Nursing Standard, which ran the awards, said: "The judges chose Grace because of her innovative and creative approach, which has been successfully integrated into a PCT service.
"This is truly nursing at its best when the expertise is developed beyond a basic job description to a scheme that benefits whole communities."
