View Full Version : Pepperoni?

Reagan LOVES the stuff and we use it quite a bit. Now that I have had some control of her numbers the last 36 hours, I can actually SEE what some foods are doing to her BG.

We gave her pepperoni last night at bedtime. It's 0 carb, so I thought we would be ok. She went from 150 at 830pm to 304 at 2am!

Could the no carb pepperoni with 13 grams of fat done that.

Do I need to be looking at something besides the carb count?

Hopefully she will be about the same tonight so we can try without and see what happens!

I actually bolus William for zero carb cheese now - depending on how much fat is in it. The fat ultimately does break down into carbs I think - a lot of can affect bgl. There was a thread awhile back about bolusing for fat that I started with some links. I'll try to find it.

Here is the old thread: http://forums.childrenwithdiabetes.com/showthread.php?t=1821&highlight=bolusing

It is most definitely our experience that eating something high fat (cheese, fatty meat, chocolate to some extent, etc) will push William's bgl up higher than what the actual carbs are.

I could see where the high fat food could break down later on and work against her with other foods just going into or already in her system.

Hormel makes a turkey pepperoni that is actually very good and less fat. I can't tell the difference, my husband can, but it might be worth trying.

I have seen the turkey kind, but haven't tried it. Thanks!

So rethinking this, I may have no true "free" carb snacks for her.

Could be part of the reason why we are having trouble regulating.

Yes, the pepperoni could have definitely caused the spikes!!! High fat foods have always caused a rise in Carson's blood sugars about 4-6 hours after eaten. And they are very very hard to get down. It usually takes 3-4 times the amount of insulin to get it down that it would have normally taken. The younger he was, the less fat it took to affect him. when he was around 2 years old, a happy meal was a nightmare!!! French fries would always shoot him through the roof in the middle of the night. Now that he's older and bigger he can handle happy meals better, but we have to use the combo bolus and increase his temporary basal rate to 130% for 3 hours when he eats high fat foods like pizza -- and just last week the Olive Garden.

Keep a food diary and don't be afraid to use the "fancy" features on the pump once you've figured out what will spike her and when.

you know, Colin has peperoni all the time and we have not had this problem. It might be HOW he eats it though. We make peperoni "chips" in the microwave. you just put them on a plate on high for a minute and then blot the grease off. They get crunchy- and he loves them. I guess alot of the fat disappears that way.

I should give a warning, though, that these are quite addicting for the non-d parents in the house too... :)

Great idea! We will try that microwave trick. And I am already addicted to just plain ol' pepperoni :)

Emma's blood sugar will spike between 11pm and 1am no matter what she eats. (This is a common time for growth hormone surges in kids.) She has a much higher basal rate from 10pm to midnight to help counter the spike.

I do see a spike 4-6 hours after a high fat food, but normally only if there are some carbs consumed around the same time. Like if she has pepperoni and water... no spike, but if she follows it with milk she'll run high for hours.
When she was first dx'd we would give her Atkins bars as a snack, thinking they would help us control her numbers because they were so low in carbs, but then she would have a bottle of milk and stay high twice as long as normal. It took a while to see this pattern and realize that you can't combine low carb, high fat items with any other carbs. It's a serious catch 22!

We have Reagan set at .2 (her highest basal) from 10pm-midnight.

Last night she was 154 at bedtime (830pm) and I was afraid that with the increase she may not stay in range all night. So we gave her 1 cheese cube, 2 pepperonis and a cracker. She was 304 at 220am.

Amy, according to your theory, the cracker could have been our trouble. I hope that she is close to that again tonight so I can try it out. That makes sense.

Our Endo team said that if basals are set right a child shouldn't even need a bedtime snack. I don't know if I believe that for a kid that eats every 2-3 hours all day, to be able to go 12 hours at night.

It's true! If basals are just right they don't need a bedtime snack, the problem is that "just right" part!;)

Now that Emma is wearing the sensor she rarely has a bedtime snack, usually just a few sips of milk if anything. If I give her a snack I cover all of the carbs with insulin, (unless she's low for some reason), because her basal will not drop her at night. Pretty cool!

My daughter eats the turkey pepperoni and actually prefers it to the other stuff!

My son loves pepperoni. I haven't noticed that his bs goes up much after eating it, but we recently switched to the turkey pepperoni because of they high fat content. Our nutritionist has talked to us about reducing some of the fat intake, just because later in life, heart disease being a factor and trying to get him to eat healthier. Same with cutting sausage and bacon some.

Anyway, my son LOVES the turkey pepperoni. The texture is different to me, but the flavor is the same.
