This is my first time on this forum! my daughter is five and was diagnosed at 13 months old. she is currently on injections, but we will be switching to the Pump in March. I am a little nervous because she doesn't like to get shots in her stomach and I have been told the main site for the Pump is the stomach area. Any suggestions on life with the pump?

I am sure that other parents of young pumpers will pump in, but there are other sites to use -- the buttocks area or the top of the leg -- as well as the stomach.
You should be using a numbing cream - like EMLA - so your daughter won't feel a thing.

Glad you found us.. My daughter, Kaylee almost 4yrs, was dx last January (06) we switched to the pump in July of 06 because she was just so harrd to control.. at dx she was only 28lbs.. and by july she hadn't gained much, a pound or two.. no extra fat on her, but we do get good sites in her belly and her bum/hip area.. where the love handles WOULD be if she had them LOL... actually that is probably our best spot right now with the best absobtion..
welcome to the board:)

Welcome to the club Im new her too. My Emma is 2 and we are using the pump we use the tops of her legs as our main site and whe we have to move to another location we use her bum. Another thing that really helps is using a numbing cream before you put the site in. We use EMLA cream an hour before we put the site in and it work great. Emma calls it "magic cream" no ouch.
Happy pumping and welcome

Welcome!
I use hips, outer thighs and upper butt cheeks for my daughter's sites. I tried her stomach twice and she does not have enough fat there, (ouch)!! We don't use numbing cream for pump sites, we use quick-sets from minimed and they feel very similar to an injection, (if that), not bad at all.
The initial transition to pumping can be a little tough, but once you get it down it is wonderful!!! Truly life changing!!
Good Luck!!:)

Welcome to this wonderful site! I too just found it recently. Love all the information.
My daughter is 7 and started on the pump when she was 6. She too didn't like the stomach. On the day she started the pump she had a great nurse who suggested she try the stomach (always seems to go better when someone other than mom suggests things). So she tried it and it went very well. We primarily use the stomach and outer thigh. We use EMLA cream when the thigh is used but nothing for the stomach (her choice). She claims it doesn't hurt in the stomach. We use the quick-set from Minimed for insertions.
I think if your daughter has fatty area around the belly it will go well. If she isn't interested just know there are plently of other areas to insert the pump just be sure to get a chart from the company who starts your daughter on the pump.
I agree with Emma's mom that the start up is challenging but once you get it down you will love the fexibility the pump offers.
Good luck!!

Hi I am new to the site! I have two sons who are on the pump. When they first started on the pump, they both were very apprehensive about the site in their abdomen. The one thing our Pump trainer did to ease the nervousness of the boys, was have my husband and I try it first. So, we did the first insertion in our abdomens, while they watched. I was so surprised how pain free the insertion is in the abdomen. Both my husband and I wore the pump for three days with saline, just to get a feel of what they are experiencing and some of the frustrations that go with wearing a pump. The boys love the pump and they will tell you that it is painless compared to the 12 years of injections 6 to 8 times a day! We are now free!:cwds:
