you are not suposed to use chocolate to treat lows cuz it has fat and that slows down the sugar from working. Things with just sugar work faster:)

Ha! My favorite thing too is fruit punch glucose tabs! Other than that it's jolly ranchers (which I chew) or sweet tarts, smarties, sprees. Those I find to act quickest - which I am always in for, cause I feel terrible when I'm low. After that, usually crackers and p/b, or appels and p/b, or a pbandj sandwich. Perty much something with peanut butter! lol!

I have apple juice. I don't want anything too tempting, because I'm still constantly hungry. Apple juice doesn't tempt me because it was making me throw up during the months of onset.

My fav is the grape or fruit punch tabs. I also like the 100 cal packs for those inbetween meal snacks. The best thing ever made for diabetics. Quanity is limited to 100cal, average grams of carbs is 15-19, and they taste like the real thing.

If i had to choose it would be... caprisuns, gummi bears, skittles, nerds, orange flavored glucose tabs, strawberry kiwi snapples (best thing in the world) and ather stuff like that... but when i go low i go really low like 20 ar when the machine just says LO and i am always still functioning so it kills me to drink and eat cause it makes me dizzy when i go back up

I have decided I prefer 50% Dextrose IV (D50W) to treat lows. It will take you from 20 to 200 in about a minute, and your symptoms instantly disappear. Just kidding.....

BTW...I also have the strange ability to function fairly well at extremely dangerously low glucose levels (20's-10's-SINGLE DIGITS greater than 6)

Chocolate milk works well for me, but i HATE milk so i only do that during soccer when i'm dying to play. Or if I'm really low at school then my friends find a teacher and get me choc milk and force me to drink it!

I usually eat some chocolate :D I know, it slows down the sugar because of the fat, but I don't have any problems. Sugar rises just the same. :p However, if my blood sugar is below 2,5 mmol/l (I think that is around 45mg/dl), then I just melt some sugar in the water and drink it. :)

I have always been told that juice is. that is what i like. when you are so low you can not chew on candy juice is a good idea. i have never liked the taste of the tablets. I drink diet mountain dew ALLL the time, therefor regular coke taste nasty!! I do have a pump but i figure, if i am already used to diets, why change back?

I think to treat a low you should have a glass of orange juice but definetly not anything breaded. Breaded items just go through your system to fast and it won't help much.

Hey Guys--a question for you.

When you treat your lows with starburst or skittles can you tell me about how many you have? Do you have 3-4 or more starbursts? How much of a small bag of skittles do you eat?

My teen son has not yet treated a low with starburst or skittles but he plans to have some on hand when school starts.

Thanks for your help!

Hey, i do not know the exact carbs info for either of these kinds of candies. but, i do know that no matter how low you are supposed to eat 15 carbs then check blood sugar again in 15 minutes. so i would sugest looking on the back of the box/bag and give him 15 carbs worth. i hope this answers your question!

For a regular pack of skittles it is 56 carbs so a little less than half of the bag and each starburst are 3 carbs

I personally don't use those I eat peanut butter reese cups because they have 23 carbs and they cover the protein.

Thanks y'all for the help. I am just trying to figure it all out since he was just diagnosed in July. I am sure you all can relate to this--Sam doesn't want to look obvious and rattle candy bags and wrappers in class (he will be a sophomore) so I am trying to think of the best thing for him to put in his backpack to treat a low at school. I like the Reese's idea because of the protein. Are any of you in sports and if so, maybe you can share your experiences with lows during sports events. Thanks!!!

For almost any sport I would say have a gatorade and all the basic supplies if you know he goes low. I play soccer so we have a half-time snack after testing ( usually low) and then one at the end which is good enough to keep my bg up. But the most important thing during lows is to be able to tell the coach so your pulled out of the game for a short amount of time.

SamsMom

Sam goes low also but usually about 2 hours after tennis. The endo said for him to have 15g carb for every 1/2 hour of exercise. It is hard to pull him out of a tennis match so we are going to do our best to keep the numbers up. What is the highest bs level you will play with? And the lowest? I did have a nurse tell him that he could sip on a small gatorade while he played. How's soccer going for you? Have you been okay managing your bs?

Well this season my mom and I decided to sit out because I getting my pump in the beginning of next month and that would require me to sit out for 2 or more weeks so I just going to continue with sports in the spring after i'm used to it, but to answer your question, the highest I've ever played with even though I know I shouldn't havee was probably 320. Lowest that I will start playing a sport is 120.

flabby_abi
08-20-2007, 09:42 PM
Yeah, i is not a good idea to start playing a sport or being really active if you are low. that could lead to seizures and comas (ive been there). if you know that he is going to go low it might be a good idea to give hime maybe a gatorade or something withought insulin before the game or practice.

Try Rockets (those rolls of halloween candy - 2 rolls is fifteen carbs - plus way cheaper .) Follow up with 1/2 pb sandwich and a glass of milk once BG is back in range. For exercise, either reduce insulin (basal and bolus)or nibble. Be sure your sugar is at least 10mmol/l before starting(I'm in Canada) or else have a snack to eat before exercise. TEST LOTS and learn to figure out what yur body does.
