Hey everyone..new girl here..I'm 17 and got diagnosed right after my birthday..Kinda sucked but i'm gettin used to it i have a couple of questions though. I'm thinking about gettin the pump is it really better having that then the shots? And i kno this one is weird and not a lot of adults will like it but i'm going to be 18 in sept and i was wondering does anyone kno a diabetic that has their tongue pierced? I want to get mine done but i'm wondering if there are big risks i should worry about? Just wondering.

Hello!
I was diagnosed right before my birthday-it SUCKS:(
About the pump-it is awesome-much easier. I love the way i dont have to carry insulin with me everywhere i go. I love the flexibility it gives me. I really recomend(sp?) it.
Anyway, good luck!:)
hey, welcome to the boards. I'm a long vetrin of shots and just about 7 months ago switched to the pump. there are upsides and downs to both systems. the pump gives you way more flexability, and way better control, defieitly reccomended if you're into taking care of yourself and willing to do all the work with it. the down side to the pumps is that they (or atleast mine) have a tendency to get in the way alot. also, if you are considering moving to a pump, be prepared, know what you are doing, and be willing to put in the effort. if you're fooling around with a pump with out being sure of what you're doing you can get in a bit of trouble someitmes.
About the tongue rings, i don't know anyone personally, but i don't see a problem with it. the only thing to be worried about is sometimes if you've been diabetic for a long period of time you can't heal as well, so there would be a higher risk of infection, but givin how long you've been diabetic i don't think that would be a problem at all. i've never had any peircings myself, but i have had tattoo's before, and never had any problems.
anyway, shoot me an email if ya wanna chat off the boards about whatever.

Thanks guys! Guess i'm just nervous having the pump and having it permantly attached to me. But if it does make things easier i'm deff going to conisider it. My lil sis has a pump and she loves it but complains when it comes to the whole swimming thing. I love piercings and tattoos thats why i asked. Skater girl for life lol..hows life been for everyone?

If you are a big swimmer, some of the pumps are waterproof...you should look into that. But I never understand how people wear thier pump in the pool-clip it onto thier bathing suit?

My pump isn't water tight, but I find that I don't need the insulin while swimming, so I just don't wear it. If I did though, I'd probably just clip it on my suit, either that or get a pouch that goes on my waist or something. If you have a pump, you know what I mean when I say that you can get creative when finding a place to put it. :) Everyone has their own ways!

Dear Friends,
I'm a type 2 teen and I was just wondering if my type of people need pumps?

Sometimes....every once and a while, type 2s have their systems break down, and they find that they're just not producing the insulin anymore. Most don't wear pumps though, they just do shots.

... on a totally not pump-thing. I know a couple diabetics with tounge rings, but I would definitly be careful and talk to my doctor about it before I do anything. It would really be awful if that got infected.

Hey Britter-Critter, great to have you here - you're definitely amongst friends.
I would definitly agree with everyone else about the pump - it is definitely worth while. I fought going on it for a long time because I didn't want to be "attached" to something 24/7. I was really against that. But, I decided to give it a try, i'm on my 3rd month on it now - and there is NO way I would even dream about going permanently back to shots! It is kind of a drag sometimes to be connected to it, but like others have said - you can disconnect from it for things like swimming. I do gymnastics and just take it off during that as well.
Also, so people do take a "break" from it once and a while as well and do Lantus and novolog/humalog (whichever you normally use.). That's really cool.
The peircing thing: Go for it. I would caution you too, though, as others have said - talk to your doctor first. You doc may suggest making sure your blood sugars are in really good control before you go in and get it done - and for a few weeks afterwards. As diabetics are known to have some problems with "wounds" healing. I got my cartiledge peirced a couple years ago and I still have problems with it - because i didn't have my blood sugars in control at all. It's getting better now, though, after being on the pump and getting all the bugs worked out. So, pretty much - have fun at it - but be smart about it too! :)
Hoped this helped a little. Have a good day!
