Hi, My trainer at the gym is Type 1 but since starting this job he doesn't have insurance. He can't get insulin without a perscription which means an expensive visit to a doctor not to mention over $400 in medicine each month with no insurance. We are in California. Does anybody know of any programs that can help him get the medicine he needs?

Thanks,
Shannon

Someone once posted a link that gave information on Children in CA who are uninsured or underinsured with chronic conditions; I believe the age limit there was 21 years old.

Does he qualify for Medicaid?

Can he find a low-cost clinic, and ask for freebie meds that drug reps leave behind?

I know that Eli-Lilly has a program where they provide insulin to those who cannot afford it; the application is here http://www.lilly.com/products/access/index.html.

I think there is a time limit to free medicine, but I bet it can be obtained through lower prices long-term. Good luck!

As far as the prescription, I think all he needs to do is go the the cheapest clinic or doctor he can find to get that.

he should qualify for medicaid.. or there should be some program that he can qualify for.. have him call his local health and human services office..

There are usually places that will help get emergency meds, but I believe you do have to have a prescription. Most insulins are prescription now because they are strong, and scarey when missused, and the number of people abusing insulin - such as body builders has increased. Maybe he could use the money he has for insulin to go to the doctor, and then get help paying for the insulin.

does your trainer live in Los Angeles County?

He should qualify for medi-cal.

And, he can just walk into an ER in a real pinch. I surely don't advocate it, but if he doesn't have I, he needs it.

Yes! He does live in LA county. Is there a special program for him there?

Thanks :)

I was reading the thing that montel williams does 4PPA or something like that. If you search the internet you could find a link i am sure. Its for uninsured people that make to much to qualify for medicare and medicaid.
