these dark cold inter days have prompted us to organise our summer holidays and I was wondering if anyone has used the aquapacs? Are they any good? where did you buy them? How do they stay on..I didn't see a belt?

If anyone has any suggestions for keeping the pump on (Eoin is nearly 3 and fiddles with everyhting :-) ) but water and sand free..I'd love to hear them

cheers

Louise

There was some discussion of them last summer on the ADA parents forum - you might do a search over there. I know at least one parent was using one and I think they liked it.

Because swimming and playing in water cause such extreme lows with my kids we always unplug while doing the swimming thing and plug back in periodically to bolus if they seem to be going to high...not very often though.

We too experience the same problem. We currently can remove Abby from the pump for up to 3 hrs (checking hourly and bolus if needed). We find that the sand at the beaches we go to here in NH is so fine and gritty that we don't want to risk getting it in the pump, so generally we will correct with the pen for highs or snacks/meals. She actually prefers the pen in this situation because she can't be bothered having us put the pump on fill cannula, then bolus. We may find that later in the evening she is running a bit high from missed basal, but we just increase it by 10-15% for a few hours.

So, what I'm getting at is that you may want to (if you can) try going without the pump and bolusing as needed before you spend the money for the aquapac (which is pretty pricey).

I guess I'll add that I was looking into the aquapacs when we were going to the beach last summer and we ended up doing what many others do - just disconnect. We had more trouble with him going low than high out on the beach.

However I did not like leaving the pump unattended (I kept it in in a container with a cold pack - not directly on ice but just kept cool). It sort of drove me nuts trying to drag the container with me or making sure I was close to it all the time. On the other hand I was just as happy that he did *not* wear it into the ocean as then I would have worried that a wave might knock it off and out into the sea. I didn't want to leave it in the room because it was a long walk back to it.

So....I don't know what is best. Perhaps putting it in a frio and supergluing it to his forehead would have solved my problems but that wasn't an option either.:p

Now that would be a site!!!

I have been pondering this one as well. What I came up with is putting it in a water tight bag, then to keep it cool, but not overly done wrap it in a piece of fleece, with an ice pack on the outside of the fleece, and then put it in a frio bag, and then in the fanny pack. Leave fanny pack off while you are lounging, but attach it when you need it. Still pain in the butt, however short from doing the above I have no other ideas on how to keep it safe, on hand, and working.

We keep ours in the cooler but in a ziploc and then inside and insulated lunch bag. We keep the cooler under an umbrella. Usually there is always someone sitting at our spot, on guard. You know, people always worry about getting their wallets stolen at the beach, I worry about the pump, because it's worth alot more than what I carry in my wallet!:D
