View Full Version : Illness hyperglycemia?

I posted a few month ago about some high blood sugar readings in my then 3 year old son (now he is 4). We were told to monitor him using ketodiastix during illness and if he showed symptoms after an A1C of 5.5 and a normal value random lab draw. If he was going to eventually get diabetes there was nothing we could do to prevent it.

Well yesterday he started with a fever. Today he wanted to drink water ALL DAY long--which is not normal for him. Tonight his blood sugar was 220 (1.5 hours after eating a small meal). I had his pee on a Ketodiastix (new box opened last month) and the glucose one turned green/brown (~500) and the ketone was 15. He drank more water and peed again 20 minutes later. Glucose in urine is now ~250 and ketones trace. His fever is now gone.

Last week at his 4 year old appointment I asked for a fasting blood sugar just to have on file and it was normal at 91.

I am going to check him first thing in the morning. I wonder if this is just related to his febrile illness. Even when he had some high finger stick readings last spring (180-230) after eating he never had even a trace of glucose in his urine. It really worries me.

Crystal, I am so sorry you are seeing high b/g's again. DX should be at 200, however not all doc's, and endo's follow that, some still follow the old 300 rule. Illness can make a regular person run high, but I am not sure how high. My instinct tells me that you are about to be the parent of a child with diabetes, but I could be wrong. Please call your doctor, or take your child to the E.R. for evaluation. I hope it goes well, and my instincts are wrong. Jamie

I'm sorry to hear about your worries about your son. It sounds like you have every reason to be worried. I remember when my son was diagnosed he was sick at the time and they did a finger poke. The doctor told me that illness could raise blood sugar but not over 200.
I hope you can get some answers. I pray it isn't diabetes.
Lynn

on my dd's first test at our general practitioners office, there was no trace of glucose in her urine but there were a higher level of proteins. So they did some blood work and more urine for further testing. 24 hours later we were in Children's Mercy. Follow up!
