Then about cried, my baby goes thru this everyday, all day and I HATE IT!! I had the nerve to wince at my poke, and here he is doing it all day. My poor sweet little boy,How I hate D right now!!

I, too hate it....I can't believe how much our little kids endure and we just chalk it up to "living with the disease".... focus postive energy to your son.....instead of fuming over the Diabetes.....spend your time telling your son how proud you are of him and how much you admire his strenght...at elast something good comes from that !

((hugs))

Even though our children need love and understanding about what they have to deal with. They also need to hear, see, and feel positive aspects about their diabetes. Livia hears from me how much smarter diabetic families are...and I go down the list of all the things she knows and how because of her our whole family is healthier. I tell her all the time what a blessing she is to our family and how thankful I am that she is just the way she is. Our children will gleen much of their attitude about their diabetes from us parents.

I've had my blood drawn recently and it's a much larger gauge needle than the 31 gauge needle that Livia uses. I have done many practice shots on myself and let all of my kids use my belly or arms for practice shots. The needle size is vastly different from a venipuncture to an insulin injection.

On the other side, I am so thankful there is insulin, even if it has to be given by injection. It keeps Livia alive and she can lead a very happy, normal life. Not that long ago, Type 1 diabetes used to be fatal. And, I remember my brother not having a blood glucose monitor...you never knew what his blood sugar was. It was *always* a guess. I'll take finger poking over that any day.

I took my b/g the other night. I cringed, and had a hard time pushing that button, but Julia does it several times a day. It made me feel horrible. Our kids are so strong. They go through so much just to stay healthy. (((hugs))) I hope you are doing better today. Jamie

I had a blood draw today too, and I thought the same thing as I was sitting there watching the blood vials fill up. I wondered how much it felt like a site insertion (I've been too chicken to do one.)

I was also really irritated as I was in the waiting room, reading "Cheating Destiny" and reading how Elliott Joslin used to say that shots didn't cause his patients any pain, evn the pediatric ones. I wondered how often HE got stuck, because those needles WERE huge back then....

I don't know about anyone else, but getting my blood drawn hurts a *lot* worse than insulin injections or putting a site in.

Just my two cents for all you parents. I have been type one for 36 years and the needles, shots, BG checks, pump insertion sets or CGMS sets are not that big of a deal. Blood draws and most vacinations are much worse. The issue is really just having to be aware full time of what is going on with ones body. As a diabetic you lose some freedom. But and this is a big but,of all the diseases one can have it really is one of the best. It is nothing like most childhood cancers, asthma as a child, arthritis, MS, MD, or a host of other chronic diseases that are so difficult and life comprimising on a daily basis. Diabetes is not fun but luckily most of us with some shots (or a pump) and food management can live relatively healthy lives for many years. The trick is to work on making it a small part of your life and not the main part of your life by building in routines and being prepared. Good luck to everyone.

My son hates the blood draws more than anything. He doesn't get them often -- mostly to check his cholesterol -- but he fights it a lot when he does have to go to the lab. Thank God it is only once a year. The blood test and injections are a hassle -- they don't hurt. He gets a little fearful about site insertions as a couple have hurt quite a bit, but nothing like a blood draw.

I just had my blood drawn, and it's WAY WAY WAY worse than blood sugar checks or injections.

I also hate D. I had to give myself a shot everyday for 2 weeks and I can not believe what they go through. It is such a horrible disease, but I have to remind myself it could be worse.
