Chance for free holidays for children with diabetes

Norfolk children with diabetes are being offered to go on free holidays full of adventure and a chance to meet other children in the same situation.

The week-long activity holidays run by Diabetes UK are open to children aged seven to 18, and include information and education about living with the condition. Normally they cost £320 for each child - a cost which has already been subsidised by Diabetes UK - but the North Norfolk group of Diabetes UK has raised money for four to six youngsters to go on the holidays free of charge. The money was raised through sponsored walks, donations and a “human fruit machine” at the end of Cromer pier.

Frank Bocking, from the local group, said: “They will get information about diabetes they may not get from their parents, and they will be able to meet others in their situation. Some children think they are the only person who has the problem. They will be fed properly, looked after properly, there will be doctors and nurses there to cover their diabetes.”

Mike Greenhalf, also from the group, said: “They are fun holidays. As well as having the medical staff on tap they do sailing, mountain biking, orienteering and so on.”

The holidays are in late July and August at different locations across the country, including Scotland, Dorset, Nottinghamshire, Northampton and North Yorkshire.

Mr Bocking is keen to hear from seven to 18-year-olds anywhere in Norfolk who wants to go on one of the holidays. If more people apply than there is funding available, winners will be drawn at random.

Anyone who is interested should write to Frank Bocking at 2 South Rise, North Walsham, NR28 0EE, before the end of March.
