Open Enrollment for Type-1 Diabetics on Second International Expedition
St. Paul, MN – Seven spots remain for diabetic adventure-seekers of all ages on an international team expedition headed for the Upper Missouri River in Montana this May. Individuals from around the world will be led by local diabetic and Ironman Triathlete, Peter Nerothin. Also on board will be type-1 Professional Wilderness Guide Stacy Cook of Madison, WI. Three team members have already registered from New Zealand, Canada and Ireland with hopes of learning more about how to live an active lifestyle while managing their diabetes.
Over the course of the trip, team leaders will challenge participants to achieve a higher level of diabetic maturity through rigorous exercise, with special interest in improved methods of teamwork and communication. From Minneapolis the group will travel to Fort Benton, taking time for smaller outdoor activities along the way. Once on the river, “Team Insulindependence” will spend five days tracing the path of Lewis and Clark along the most scenic piece of the mighty Missouri River.
Founded in the fall of 2005, Insulindependence is a Minnesota non-profit corporation focused on changing diabetic lives through adventure travel and educational outreach. In addition to individuals, Insulindependence aims to educate health care professionals about the importance of active lifestyles for people with diabetes. Last spring a free seminar was held for the public at the University of St. Thomas, featuring Nerothin, Canadian Olympian Chris Jarvis, New Zealand’s newest Ironwoman Mandy Parish, and World-class Mountaineer David Panofsky. This will be Insulindependence’s second expedition—the first was a two-week teen expedition along the Inca Trail in Peru.
Insulindependece recognizes the dismal lack of guidance for people with diabetes, particularly in the areas of fitness and recreation. “It is my foremost belief that diabetes is not an inhibiting condition with regard to high-level activity; my very existence is a refutation of the traditional view that moderation is the sole means to good glucose control,” says co-founder Peter Nerothin. “We propose that extreme forms of activity actually precede stability in blood-sugar levels, a trend attributable to the cycle of inspiration that begins with the decision to push beyond the limits of convention.” Insulindependence understands that each person has his/her own capacity as an athlete and challenges people with diabetes to live up to that level within the constraints of their personal lives, whether or not it leads to Olympic Gold.
Insulindependence supporters include Balance Bar; Powerbar; and Medtronic.
