View Full Version : Calibration Waiting Times

Hi Everyone,

We are not on a CGM yet, but I have a question that could determine which one I choose. So the 2 hour calibration period with MM and DexCom, I can see that you just have to wait out those 2 hours. But, with a 10 hour waiting period for the Navigator, how is that convenient? When you go to replace your sensor, can you put a second one on while the first is still working so in fact you don't really wait 10 hours without having data? How does the calibration time period work?

There is a blog of someone who is wearing the Navigator, and she had her sensor fail/malfunction right at the 10 hour mark, and then had to reapply and wait 10 more hours. That seems like a really long time. http://diabetesselfcare.blogspot.com/2006/12/day-nine-10-cgm-trial.html

Thanks!

I've thought about this too. If Dexcom comes out with a waterproof sensor then I'm not sure I would want to switch to a 10 hour wait. Especially when I'm so used to a 2 hour warm-up :) It will be a no brainer if Dexcom is not waterproof though. Big deal in summer time here in Texas!!

On the 3rd day, and 9th day (if you get that far), there's a trick which you can do with the R/T to avoid even the two-hour wait... restart it using the "3rd day" trick, and your next reading comes up in about 15 minutes.

On every 6th day, you DO have the whole 2-hour warm up. I use Dexcom, I don't know exactly what to do differently on the R/T but users on the diabetescgms board DO know.

10 hours with no readings is almost a show-stopper for me, and I'm not at all thrilled that Navigator "reads" the Serial # of each Sensor and refuses to let you re-use it. If the programming allows only 5 days, that's all you get. And if the released programming is modified to allow only THREE days, while still preventing "off-label" restarts, I won't buy it.

Even if insurance paid 100% of the Sensor cost, AND THEY WON'T, I just wouldn't like all those extra stabbings.

We have a two hour warm up *only* when I put in a new sensor. After 72 hours the sensor ends and I hit "start new sensor". It asks for a calibration within 5 minutes and is right back on track. The exact same thing happens after each 72 hour segment.
We've been averaging 9 days per sensor, and it seems like when we go longer we may have to d/c and restart at some point after the 9 day mark, but still it's just 2 hours. I've only d/c'd during use 2 or 3 times ever.

I agree that the 10 hour warm up seems excessive. I'm sure it has to be hooked up for the countdown to start, so I doubt you can get around it.
I also hadn't heard about the sensor serial number recognition. I can't imagine being limited to 3 days, or even 5 if they get FDA approval for that.
