Are there any differences between the causes for the two types of diabetes?

I know that there are different symptoms and treatments but is type 2 also caused by destruction of cells produced by the pancreas?

No, Type 1 is the type that the beta cells are damaged in the pancreas and can no longer make insulin... Type 2 your body still makes the insulin, your body just forgets what to do with it so you take pills.. Type 1 is a life long medical condition that requires daily injections (or the use of a insulin pump).. Type 2 can be controlled by diet and pills most of the time... there are a few out there that require insulin injections as well..

First let me say that there are more than 2 kinds of diabetes but for the sake of clarification I will only tell you the difference between types 1 and 2.
Type 1 is the result of the destruction of the beta cells in the pancreas that normally produce insulin. This can be due to a virus attacking the pancreas or some other reason and usually happens fairly quicly.
Type 2 begins with the cells in the body not being able to produce insulin properly and the insulin building up in the body causing weight gain and other problems. During this time the liver is also spilling glucose (glycogen) into the blood stream in response to the insulin that is not being used but is being sent out by the pancreas. It is like a feud going on inside the person's body. The insulin increases causing weight gain, etc. The blood sugar rises and eventually you have diabetes type 2. After a while the pancreas starts to wear out and stops producing insulin. Usually by the time the person is diagnosed with diabetes type 2 the pancreas is only working at 50% capacity. Most people with type 2 can benefit from losing weight but if you have too much insulin floating around it is very hard to do so.
Remember that whatever the type of diabetes, no person brought them on themselves. Whatever the reason, we need to support each person and help all people to live healthiest lives possible.
Now just a little list of the different types of diabetes
Type 1
Type 2Gestational (only happens during pregnancy and disappears at the end of the pregnancy)
type 1.5 (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults which is like type 1 but a little slower to develop)
MODY (Mature Onset Diabetes in the Young)
Other ( due to removal of pancreas because of cancer or pancreatitis.)

The symptoms are the same for both types of diabetes. The misunderstanding might be because many people with type 2 are older and are diagnosed as a result of other things going on like stroke, heart attack, etc. The symptoms for both types are the same.

If you look around this forum for any length of time, you will find the threads in which we express our frustration with people who assume they know everything about diabetes because their Aunt Mildred had it.

I appreciate the fact that you knew you didn't know something and asked a question so you could be better informed.

If there are other questions you have, just ask. If it's "why is the sky blue?' then you can Google that one. :)

Read your card. You need one correction. Type 2 cannot be cured or reversed. It is progressive. I know the media has promoted the thought that type 2 is reversible but it is not. I always remember it this way.
Type 1 Pancreas goes Kaput. Stops working because antibodies in the body attack the beta cells in the pancreas causing the beta cells to die off.
Type 2 the Pancreas wears out and dies slowly. Type 2 is not caused by obesity. If Obesity caused Type 2 then all obese people would have type 2 diabetes. Type 2 is very genetic in nature.

The symptoms for both types are the same. Only 30 % of people with type 2 are obese.
You can do nothing to reverse or cure either type of diabetes.

We need to educate each other. There is too much misinformation out there about diabetes period.

I read the card but for it to say that typeII diabetics are non-insulin dependant is not right. My father is a typeII diabetic insulin dependant and has been insulin dependant for 30+ yrs.

Thank you for that statement. I think we need to learn about both types of diabetes. I get so tired of hearing type 2 can be cured. It cannot. It is progressive. Every person is different in how they need to handle their diabetes and control their blood sugars.
I have type 2 due to genes and not due to weight. I just roll my eyes when people say, But you are not fat". Well Duh!!1

My father has never been over weight a day in his life. We had no diabetes on any side of the family when he was Dx. His diabetes is covered through the VA for agent orange related diabetes due to being a vet of vietnam and being exposed to the defoliant Agent Orange. I have been trying to see if there is a link between that and my sons DX since diabetes is known to skip a generation. I have alot of info concerning this and it seems that there could be a link but getting someone to research it is a different story.

At the recent Clinical Diabetes Technology Meeting (http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/cdtm2007/), Erik Dutson, MD, a bariatric surgeon, spoke about surgery as a "cure" for type 2 diabetes in morbidly obese patients. He said that in the vast majority of his patients with type 2 diabetes, they could stop oral medications immediately after surgery -- meaning before any weight loss occurred.

He said that he had no explanation for this, but suggested that the alterations in the flow of food in the gut changed the secreation of hormones in such a way as to change the underlying type 2 diabetes.

It was fascinating, and clearly is a topic for much additional research.

My husband was diagnosed with type 2 last August and he has never been heavy either. I think a lot of people think diabetes is due to weight and too much sugar. That is so far from the truth.

I have a nephew who WAS overweight and diagnosed at age 22. He lost a bunch of weight and after so doing, he was able to stop taking medication.
