Hello to All,

I just wanted to share this "teeny"-tiny tidbit. It will probably seem obvious to most of you, but it went off like a light bulb for me recently. My DS was diagnosed at 6 and he's 12 now. I pretty much went EVERYWHERE with him, including staying for ball practices/games, restaurants, outings, etc. He mainly had friends play at OUR house out of convenience, with the exception of immediate neighbor friends. Well.....

Since I've always been WITH him, I would just carry around his supplies in a "fanny pack" that I would either wear or sling over my shoulder. Without a word ever being spoken, I knew that Brandon would never be caught dead holding one of these things. Well, recently he started having 2 hour basketball practice, plus play dates at other friends' houses. For the first B-ball practice I decided to cut the umbilical cord and drop him off

I told him to grab his meter, glucose tabs, water bottle, snack and cell phone.

He comes out of his room having all these supplies in his gym bag. Duh:cool: And by "gym" bag I mean the light weight drawstring ones that you wear on your back.

I never would have thought to put the stuff in there! So it doesn't look obvious that he's carrying medical supplies, nor does it look ever-so uncool as a fanny pack.

Of course, I have the back up comfort of his coach being previously well-informed on Brandon's needs and warning signs (so no questions when Brandon is sitting on the bleachers having a snack,) and a few of his teammates are also aware of his condition. Brandon knows to check BS halfway through or at the first sign of a low.

I am allowing him to venture out since he has proven to be responsible about his D all these years. I prefer him to have a cell phone with him at all times so he can always reach me. So now, he has a little more freedom to be a (almost) teenager, and still be as "cool" as the rest of the kids.

I hope this helps those moms of young (D) teens out there.

Thanks for your time. ;)

As a teen and a avid user of a laptop it wouldn't work for me and it's way to bulky anway...That being said I'm older and a girl....
