:( My son got braces put on him yesterday and oh the pain he is experiencing today. He is home from school with his dad, and I just met them for lunch. Poor thing can't chew and was so hungry and in pain. He finally had a turkey sandwich at Atlanta Bread Company today with a bag of chips and bolused 2 units (we guessed at the carbs). Well, an hour and a half later I get a call from him while sucking down some Gatorade, that he was outside kicking around the football and felt low. Came in to test (he was getting dizzy he said) and the meter read 38!!! My heart about stopped. But he was coherent and luckily close by to get at the fridge. I told him to call back in 30 minutes with new numbers. Our mistake was that he hadn't wanted to eat anything at all at the restaurant because of the pain and so didn't bother testing his BG. But then as we were eating he said he would try a turkey sandwich since he was so hungry and at that point we forgot to go get the monitor out of the car. My Bad!!! :(

He was probably pretty low before lunch. Poor thing. I hate him suffering with braces. Yet another obstacle for diabetes! I was telling him, he might just need to be on baby food until his teeth stop hurting. :p

Sorry to hear about the 38 :-(.

Check with your pediatrician and orthodontist. My kids took Advil on the days they saw the orthodontist (about an hour before the appointment). It helped a lot. Smoothies and milk shakes are good too for getting some calories in them when they don't want to chew.

Smoothies are a great idea, and a great treat, since most of the time, I don't encourage them for the calories. But in this case, yes, I will give it a try. Thanks Ellen!!!

Yeah, 38 was very scary for me.

If he likes the Campbells Cream of Chicken soup or Tomato. Both require no chewing. Hope he gets to feeling better soon. Boy do I remember those days.

Poor Guy! It's amazing how D can complicate everything!!!!!:( I'm glad he was able to think clearly and get some sugar!
Hopefully that will always be his all time low.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. He DOES love Campbell's Tomato soup, so I think I will stock up on that for sure! Also, I am monitoring his basals right now. We went out for a walk and I made sure that he turned it down by -10 for an hour while we walked the dog to be sure that he wouldn't go too low! :o

Well, at least the braces are not as "nerdy" as in my day. :D
