I just bought the Salter 1450 about 3 weeks ago -- LOVE IT!!! I was a little disappointed with the lack of "instructions" it came with though. My question is about weighing things like fruit. Do you weigh fruit like banana and oranges with the peel on or off? The Calorie King book specifies if it's on or off, but the Salter does not. Except for Apples -- it said Apple with or without skin, but doesn't say anything about weighing a whole apple with the core. So I've been peeling the fruit like banans and oranges and then weighing it.

Does anyone know how the weight is calculated?

I agree the scale is great! I don't know about bananas (no one here actually eats them), but oranges can be weighed with or without the skin (seems like you get more for your carbs when you peel it)and mine has different titles for each. When you plug in/spell out "orange" and then scroll through, the different options for oranges should come up. Good luck. Hope it works for you.

I was wondering about bananas as well. I just started weighing them peeled. Liv actually went low and I weighed it peeled. So, I guess I am saying that the peeled banana works the best for us. I still need to decrease insulin a little for a the amount of carbs in a (peeled)banana weighed by the Salter 1450.

I was wondering about this also :D I do wish it at least came with a booklet of foods so I did not have to type in something four different ways to see if it is in there lol How many different ways can you type in mandarine orange ;)

Here's a list of their foods I found on their website. www.salterhousewares.com/tpages/products/salter_table.html

I think is the UK version of the spellings/foods. (The scale has a button you can switch to go from UK to US spellings) But these foods are all on the US food list, too.

Bananas are the hardest -- Carson is tired of them right now, so not a big deal. Apples, I usually cut and weigh. And oranges, too. You can weigh it with the skin as an option, but that's if you EAT the peel. I weighed one with the skin and it said there were a ton of calories and something like 17 grams of FIBER -- so that had to be eating the skin, too.

Other than that, I have such high praise for that scale. It's made me a lot more confident to change rates because I know I'm not screwing up the carb count.

I think I recognized you from the parents forum from the American Diabetes Website.
Since I assume you are using Carb Factors, the answer to your question is you weigh the food like you are going to eat it. So if you eat the apple with the skin on weigh it that way. If you eat the apple without the skin, then peel it first. The same thing for other fruits. This also goes for waffles and toast. Toast the waffle or bread first and then weigh it. You will notice a very noticeable difference in the weight between bread and toast and frozen waffles and toasted waffles. Why, I do not know.
By the way, I want to get the Salter 1450. I heard it has a lot of good features and am interested in getting it. I do have a regular digital scale by Salter and it works fine. I am keeping my eyes open for a good deal on the Salter 1450.

We have this scale and I usually weigh things the way he eats them so I weigh a banana peeled.
