i know different breads have different carb contents. But our minimed agent suggested/advised us to consider a carb factor od 1 for the bread we consume in iran. That is 1 carbs for 1 gram of bread! Just like sugar! Mendosa's carb table suggests that the highest bread carb factor is something like .6! And bread usually has a carb factor of .5 or so. I guess we're mising something. It's said though that certain foods may have 'wierd' carb factors for some individuals. But i doubt that it's the case for us. i guess this 'hand made' carb factor for bread is misleading us yielding to an incorrect I:C ratio.
How many carbs do YOU consider for say 100 grams of bread?

Bread is extremely variable. We use high fiber, low carb breads at home, but it's hard for me to judge the carbs in breads when we go out.

All our breads for us have the carb/fiber counts on them. Except of course the deli/homemade style breads that you buy at the market. I've seen breads range from 13g to 21g per slice... not counting the ones marketed as low carb. We usually buy the Villageo Whole Wheat bread and it's 13g per slice. I've never measured how heavy a slice is. I will once I get my Salter scale next week.

You might want to get the computer program, "Master Cook." You can plug in your recipes and it will calculate the nutritional information. I use this for some of my recipes.

We too try to stay away from bread without labels on them but I have heard that "most" baked goods have a carb factor of around .6 - I also use this for cupcakes and birthday cakes with good success.

I agree that the best way is probably to calculate it from the recipe.

We guess and learn from experience. We don't use any low carb breads.

See if this link helps at all. Just click on the type of bread that is the closest to what you buy and see what it says. I think 1:1 ratio for bread weight to carbs sounds like a lot! We do not buy low-carb bread, and most of ours runs between 15 and 23 carbs for 56 grams.

If for some reason the link comes up wrong, the main address is: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ and just type in "bread"

We eat French Meadow Breads. The men's bread is 5 g per slice and the Women's bread is 7 g per slice. Sometimes we use ezekiel bread and that is 11 grams per slice. We don't eat products with flour in them though, which is why we use these breads. They are fairly tasty though!
