Hi,

My son is 7. He reads a lot - he read the whole pink panther book from the hospital on diabetes. His dr. asked about us going on a pump and he was all excited and interested in it. We went to the 'pump' education class - and they were going to put an infusion set in at the end - just to see what it feels like, etc. He started crying, got really upset. He finally agreed to try it - wore it home and slept in it. (no tubes or pump, just the site). Well, he decided that he did want to get the pump. But they told us in the class you would HAVE to rotate sites between the bum and the stomach. He doesn't get shots in the stomach now - can't stand the thought of it. We rotate now from the bum, arm and leg. He's pretty lean and doesn't have a lot of fat on the legs.

My question is this: Now he doesn't want the pump at all - only for the reason that you have to rotate sites to the stomach. Can this be avoided at all? Is there anyone else that just rotates other places besides tummy?

Thanks in advance,
Stacey

SLK, Alot of people don't use the tummy because their child is to skinny. Some people just use the bum, or the leg, or whatnot. Just be sure to rotate the site well, and don't use the same site until it is fully healed. Also feel around on occasion to make sure scar tissue isn't building in that area.
Good luck, I hope you like the pump, Jamie

Abby is 5 and weighs 39lbs. She has no fat on her tummy, so for us, the bum, hip, or thigh are the only locations we have used. Most times we just jump from cheek to cheek and have yet to have an issue with lumps.

Yes, they will tell you this in pump class that you do need to rotate, but it's not written in stone. I think they just want everyone to know of the different options. Talk with your CDE and endo about your concerns, they should be able to work with you on this matter.

We have never used anywhere but bum, for both injections and pump sites (4+ yrs). I did "try" a tummy set once, but Rachel hobbled around bent double for the morning until I changed it. I don't think it hurt, she just didn't like the feel  .

We just started pumping yesterday and Hunter had never had a tummy injection b4, so he won't even entertain the thought of putting a site there yet. He told me "Next Thanksgiving" he will :) He's a butt man, so I will have to rotate well.

Tummy shots was a requirement for our endo team to even consider putting our daughter on the pump. It took some convincing:rolleyes: . Cost me a beta fish, but it was well worth it. After the first shot she was hooked and wondering what to her so long.

My 10 y.o. daughter has been pumping 2 mths. She is very thin so we only use her upper bum - no where else. We have to change the site every 2 days. I just rotate side to side then try to put the site on a new place. The endo said as long as it is 1" from the last site then it's OK. She will not try any other place and I've talked to people pumping a long time who only use the backside with no problems as long as you move the site around there.

Our Hunter has been pumping since Feb 06 and until last week we only used his bum for sites. He too is very lean. Our team told us with him to stick with his bum for sites. We just switched to a different set and he tolerates them well in his stomach. We just had to move around his bum a bit when we changed sites.

Thanks everyone for the replies. We ordered the pump today - we are getting animas. I will keep reading and I'm sure asking more questions.
Thanks,
Stacey

One more here....we also only use the bum. The Endo showed us how to "zigzag" the sites for rotation and seems OK with it. She would like Emily to use the tummy at some point, but Emily says "NO WAY!" right now. She is pretty thin, although FINALLY starting to fill out some. She did try tummy shots at camp, but it always caused bleeding and left a big bruise.

we started out with a tummy site on Kaylee.. She is very thin too.. but she loves having the site on her tummy, we never gave shots there.. she is only 31/32lbs at almost 4 years old.. and she's tall as well.. we also use her bum/hip and leg area.. she's dying to try her arm.. not sure why LOL

The weird thing is that we get much better numbers when the site is on her belly..

I think K like the belly sites because it doesn't get it the way of her pants.. when we have a belly site we can get 4 days out of it.. a bum or a leg site gets caught on pants/undies/pjs and doesn't last as long..

glad you decided to go ahead and pump.. :)
